This oil cleansing face thing...

...it's making me spottier.

Surely this is not the idea?

Only been doing it for a few days but skin feels worse if anything.

And I smell of pans.

Worth persisting?

I've been doing it for about 18 months (after reading about it on here), and it's done wonders for my skin. Can't think why it would be making you spottier, what oil are you using? Are you wiping it all off properly?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/10/2010 13:33

About 3/4 olive oil, 1/4 castor oil - have I made some terrible oil-based gaffe?

I massage it into my skin for a few minutes, get a nice hot washcloth and place it over my face til it cools, rinse in hot water and place it over my face again (couple of times), wipe off oil...then rub a tiny bit into my skin afterwards as otherwise it feels really dry.

Have eczema as well which doesn't help.

What am I doing wrong?

I've just ordered some castor oil online (I've been to about 50million chemists and health food stores - no exaggeration, and no one sells it!!Hmm) so am waiting for it to come before I begin.

I discovered a forum about it where a few people got spottier. Some temporarily before it got better and others just seemed to have no luck at all.

Pick a forum here.

Which oil(s) are you using and in which ratio if using a mixture?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/10/2010 13:48

thanks Easy - I managed to find some (finally) in a little chemist shop in Harringay.

75% olive oil
25% castor

(ish)

are you supposed to do it every day? And if not, what in between?

Try grapeseed oil (apparently a natural astringent oil) or Jojoba oil instead of olive oil. Holland & Barrat or Neals Yard sell (or Planet Organic etc).

Chemists sell Castor oil, not health food shops as its mostly used to relieve severe constipation. Its kept behind counter so you have to ask.

Tried OCM with olive oil and it was a greasy nightmare with spots to prove it.

Tried it with grapeseed oil and it was great. Even used grapeseed oil on its own without castor oil and it was fine and did not cause breakouts.

You could add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your mix too. Whether it helps keeps skin clear, I don't know but it smells looooovely.

frakkinnakkered · 11/10/2010 14:16

That might be a bit too much castor oil. Apparently castor oil can make you spottier.

moragbellingham · 11/10/2010 14:23

I'm trying about 5% castor oil(bought from Tesco pharmacy) with 95% rice bran oil also from Tesco.

Nothing yet, not spottier but no amazing difference either.

Can't find any other fancy oils only sunflower oil. Would that do?!

Will try doing a new mix with much less castor oil. Glad it's not just me anyway, that mix I've been using feels far too astringent.

Have previously been using Lush Ultra Bland which is goodish but wanted to try OCM as it gets such a good press.
