Is your DD an 'average sized' 5 year old? Does she own a Boden fleece lined, spotty coat? Is 7-8 ridiculously huge??

Just that really. Trying to get an idea of sizing for a winter coat.
I have a DD who is v tall for her age, curently in 5-6 dresses and tops but 4-5 trousers. She has one of the boden lightweight stripey jackets in 5-6 which fits generously, she's certainly not grown out of it. I want to get her one of the fleece lined wintery jackets... will be she swamped in 7-8? I like to buy with 'room to grow into' but don't want her to look ridiculous!

Thoughts?

I think she'll be fine in it. DD had one of these and I must have bought it a size big as she wore it for 2 years.

Tobermory · 09/10/2010 22:22

Hmm, you think?
Maybe I should order both sizes?

DD is a average sized 4 year old and she fits the 5-6 fleecy winter coat (which is not as thick as the boy's), it's a bit big, comes to knee length but not ridiculously so and will do for 2 years. DS is a tall 6yr old and he will get a 2nd year out of his 5-6yr coat which now just covers his bottom. Not sure I've helped but if it's free returns maybe get both sizes?

DinahRod · 09/10/2010 22:32

sorry xposted your last suggestion.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/10/2010 22:34

Ok, DD's cost is 7-8 (just looked at the label). She's 9 now, she wore it last year when she was 8 and the year before when she was 7. But she's small for her age and has only just started wearing 7-8 trousers. Looking at the coat I think it would still fit her now. But its pink with brown spots and she's too old for pink now so I had to get her a purple coat from John Lewis. Hmm

Indecision!

Is the fleece lined coat warm enough for the depths of winter? We have only had summer jackets before so not sure just how padded they are.

DD wore it all year round and it was plenty warm enough.

happilyeverafter · 09/10/2010 23:35

My DD has that jacket from last year and it was more generously sized than the 3 in one padded jacket in the same size. I would order both sizes.

Ixia · 10/10/2010 01:06

My 5yr DD is 110cm tall and weighs 18kg, she has a 7-8 spotty coat and has already been wearing it for 12mths. It doesn't swamp her, yes it's warm enough as she's never still and would get too hot in anything thicker. But should it get majorly cold, then there is enough room for a jumper underneath.

Clary · 10/10/2010 01:18

My DD is 9 and her Boden padded jacked (the one with the zip-off sleeves) fitted her fine last year (when she was 8) and it's a 9-10.

She's not a very big 9yo either. So based on that I reckon you will be fine with 7-8.

I would order both sizes tho, free returns yeah?

DS2's best mate (boy, but still) had a fleece anorak from Boden last year and I think it was fine re warmth.

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2010 07:59

DS has a Boden fleece lined anorak. He is a tall and skinny 2 year old and 2-3 is big enough on the body, but will be above his bum soon. Looks to be plenty warm enough though.

BikeRunSki · 10/10/2010 07:59

I think they put their sizing on the website don't they?

miche8 · 10/10/2010 08:56

I've just bought the smallest size ( i forget if its 12-18 or 18-24) for my 8 month dd, shes big and wears 12month clothes, its a little big but wearable. Very pleased with it and its much warmer/padded than expected, going to order them for my boys.

moragbellingham · 10/10/2010 19:37

I've just bought an age 3-4 fleece lined anorak for my average height 3 1/2 yo DD1. It's too long in the sleeves and will last hopefully through next winter too.
I buy with a view to passing it down to DD2 so don't have to be so careful.

moragbellingham · 10/10/2010 19:38

Rather than buy the 5-6 (if she's 5) I would go with the 7-8.

Tobermory · 10/10/2010 20:29

Morag, she's not 5 ... she's 3! However she's the size of a 5 year old, 18kg and something over 110cm tall. She wore her jacket today, it fits perfectly, generously but still going to try 7-8. Ilike the idea of 2 winters-worth!
Thanks all for your thoughts.

God my children are small!! My 4.5 yo is still in her 2-3 coat and will wear it all winter! IME Boden comes up about the same as Next, maybe a titch bigger.

Tobermory · 11/10/2010 09:00

I'm really tall as is DH, we were never going to get a short one!

OP posts:
ColdComfortFarm · 11/10/2010 09:04

Boden is generously sized so I'd go 5-6, and she will be fine this year and probably next. But if not, Ebay it and you'll get at least half your money back!

petalpower · 11/10/2010 11:28

Why don't you order both sizes - if you go through the MN link you get free delivery and free returns so you haven't lost any money on it!

HotchpotchHoney · 11/10/2010 14:09

this years ones come up small. previously dd had a size smaller than she was, but this year at 4.6 she has a 5-6 and while roomy isn;t massive, so i would go bigger.

HotchpotchHoney · 11/10/2010 14:10

d'oh didn;t read the op properly. i would go for the 5-6 as she is only 3.

moragbellingham · 11/10/2010 15:06

I've decided to return my 3-4 and get a 5-6 as so many people have said that they are not ridiculously huge.
Two winters are better than one!!
