ok, don't want to post a photo but I have long dark brown fine hair (no fringe) which I haven't had cut since last christmas Blush. Am having it done tomorrow and want a change. At the moment I just put my hair up every single day.
Have young kids and am SAHM so need something that is easy to maintain and doesn't look shit without having to style it. I am petite, have small features but quite a square jawline.

Any ideas please?

You could go for a graduated bob with a side fringe if you want to lose some of the length?

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 08/10/2010 20:39

I had long hair, without a fringe and was thinking of a bob (also SAHM). After loads of good advice on here I ditched the bob idea and now have long layers and a fringe. It works a treat and looks great, if I do say so myself.

Rather than try to rehash it all here I'll link, assuming I can find it.

pigindisguise · 08/10/2010 20:43

Am tempted by bob but would it not accentuate my jaw? or would it soften it?

Fermina I normally go for the long layers and a sweeping fringe type thing and then it grows out (which is where I'm at now), so I do fancy a bit of a change

Bobs can be cut in different ways and to different lengths so technically they can be flattering for most people. The trick is to go to a good hairdresser and get advice on which length and style of bob would suit you best

I'm in the same boat as you OP...almost exactly! Apart from I only have one DD.

I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow (leaving 8wk old DD with the husband, will have to feed her to the gills before I go!), I think I am going to get the length chopped a little (leaving long enough to tie back) and have a fringe cut in. I used to have a heavy/blunt fringe and loved it. I like fringes because they highlight my eyes and make me look like I have a hairstyle as against just hair! Look good when hair tied back too.

I guess they can be high maintenance though, no-one wants a greasy fringe! If you do go for one, you can always just wash your fringe and blow dry it (emergency quick fix cheat!) and tie back the rest of your hair.

Have you seen any pics you like? I think bobs can be really soft and flattering depending on how they're cut, they're really versatile.

I like heavy fringes MrsC but my hair isn't thick enough for one. I have been driving myself cross-eyed looking at photos of bobs on google images!!! but STILL haven't found one that I love.

I totally know where you're coming from about having a hairstyle as opposed to just hair - mine is just hair and that's what I hate about it!

Typical DH though just got home and when I mentioned the word bob he went hmm, and said 'I wouldn't get too much cut off' AAAAAAGH

think I will jsut play it by ear and see what hairdresser says. Never been there before (am new to area) but it looks decent enough and not cheap

Well, I went for a fringe in the end, leaving the rest long but choppy so I can tie it back. I didn't get a blunt blunt fringe, it has been chopped into so a bit lightter, perhaps that would work for you?

That and long layers has turned my hair from just 'hair' into a hairstyle that looks grand and is even more practical than it was before. I use this sea spray to give some texture to my hair. It's fine and very straight and this is the only product that's ever been able to do anything with my hair. Hair wax and the other usual suspects just disappears somehow.

Bobs are really hard work, or so I'm told. Requiring daily straightening (even on very straight hair). Either it's too short to go be put up and you have to put the work in but it still gets in your face. Or, it's long enough to put up and you do just that and have the ubiquitous 'mummy tail'. Unless it's a top class cut maintained to prefect you run the risk of just being another mum with a mumsy bob...

The joy of a good fringe with long hair is that it looks really good up as well as down. You're not stuck with a style that forces you to put the work in, which, IMHO is essential as a SHAM to young children. In a (usually child induced) emergency you can even just wash the fringe and shove the rest up in a messy bun and still look good.

pigindisguise · 09/10/2010 21:52

well as suspected I ended up with the same hairstyle AGAIN! hairdresser said a bob wouldn't suit me and that long was better, so I was happy to go with what she said. Have sort of a fringe but fermina I am having that fringe next time! really like it plus my DH fancies her so can't be a bad thing Grin
