Oil Cleansing Questions...

OK, I have read a number of the old threads but I'm still confused.

I have oily spot prone skin, so the whole thing seems counter intuitive to me but I'm giving it a go.

I've done 2 nights so far oil cleaning using Dermatalogica Pre Cleanse which I've had hanging around in the cupboard but been too scared too use on my skin as it's OIL.

So far OK no disaster or amazing results.

BUT what do I do in the morning?? Yesterday I just used my normal witch Hael based cleanser but this morning I avoided that and just used water but I keep thinking 'my face is not clean the spots are going to start appearing any minte now'!!

So..

Quetsion 1- Do I oil cleanse every night?

Question 2 - How do I cleanse when not oil cleasning, in mornings or on nights off?

Hope you can help.

I went to a Dermalogica product training day and they say you are supposed to use it in the morning as well. But the Pre-Cleanse is designed for the "double cleanse" method which means you first cleanse with the oil and then use another cleanser afterwards.

This is not strictly the same as the simple oil cleansing method that others here are using because the protocol with the Dermalogica skincare routine includes using a toner and a moisturiser afterwards too.

Yes I read that you are supposed to cleanse after the pre cleanse but that confused me too, as it seems to basically be an oil cleanser so not sure why you need to cleanse aftre this but not after the normal OCM?

Also one OCM site linked to said that you shouldn't OC every day but Dernalogica say you should do it am and pm??

I'm getting more confused the more I read.

Also can anyone give me any tips on where to buy the oils? Any where good on the internet?

I thought you were supposed to do oil cleansing at night, then just wash with a flannel/ linen cloth and hot water in the morning. I found that the oil cleansing did work well, but I didn't like the feeling of the oil on my skin before I wiped it off. I have found that a good creamy cleanser works just as well as the oil if you steam/wipe it off with a face cloth after.

I like the oil on my skin, I don't like not cleansing in the morning.

I just use hot water in the morning in the shower and than use my beloved Liz Earle toner ti freshen up.

I feel clean after that.

An oil cleanser? What's actually in it? Can't you just use olive oil or whatever? Are you just using it cos you have it?

I ocm in the morning, flannel at night. It won't work properly if you mix it up with a normal cleanser.

BridesheadRegardless · 08/10/2010 11:39

Yup I'm using it cos I have it, but in the process of buying some actual oils online, honest.

Precleanse is a mixture of oils (i'll look what's actually in it when I go to the loo) but Dermalogica say it's a pre cleasner to your normal cleanser, to deep clean.

Some people seem to be hardcore OCMers some a bit more laissez faire. I don't know what to do.

You don't need to buy oils on line. What do you cook with? Failing that, boots sell small bottles of olive oil. You kind of sound like you're over complicating it..like dermologica do!

Havingkittens · 08/10/2010 11:48

Pre-cleanse, along with various other oil based cleansers, like the Clarins and the Shu Uemura ones are based on the same principles as the OCM but the oils they use are 'hydrophilic' which means they emulsify and dissolve in water so can be washed clean away. This is why you need to use a moisturiser with them and not with the simple OCM which leaves a certain amount of oil on the skin.

Some people favour the 'double cleanse' method and some don't. I guess it depends whether you feel you need a deep cleanse or not. It's good if you wear quite a lot of make up.

Well I have olive oil in the cuopboard but I'm looking at buying some jojoba oil, castor oil and maybe grapeseed or almond oil, as these are all recommended for oily skin.

Ruddy you are the OCM Boot Camp Sergeant!!Grin

You are right, I am most likely over compliacting it, but what fun is there if I don't need new products and can't excitedly await the postmans delivery for a few days??

your're spoiling the fun.

But go on tell me what to do I need it[grin[.

This is my method.

I have 2 bottles, one is pure castor oil (from chemists), one is a mix of about 25% castor and 75% veg oil.

At night I rub the blended oil all over my face then remove with very hot flannel. Then I put pure castor oil on my t-zone and go to bed.

In the morning I rub more blended oil in, remove in the shower with very hot water. I use a tiny bit of blended oil as a moisturiser if I need it.

I have oily pillowcases and nice skin.

BridesheadRegardless · 08/10/2010 11:54

castor oil directly on T zone, I've not read that before. is that good for oily spot prone skin??

Ruddy it is complicated!!!

Castor oil is drying and I am very oily so it helps.

juneybean · 13/11/2010 22:39

Ugh help....!

I've been trying to do this, I startedd with extra virgin olive oil and a friend said it was drying so I sought out some sunflower oil but the sunflower oil has left my skin even dryer!

What should I use? I'm not using castor oil because of the dryness

Frizzbonce · 13/11/2010 23:07

Try DHC cleansing oil here: £16www.dhcuk.co.uk I know it's a bit counter intuitive with oily skin but this stuff leaves your skin feeling very soft and clean and non oily. I think if you use cleansers that strip the skin of oil, the skin creates more oil to compensate. What an arse eh?

Shu Uemura do a lovely cleansing oil too but I think it's insanely expensive.

In the morning I just use a clean facecloth and warm water. And remember that oily skin = less wrinkles later!
