Am I the only person who can't make dry shampoo work for them?

I was all excited about extra sleep time every three days, but the brushing involved in using dry shampoo seems to make my hair actually look worse. It's very fine and straight, though lots of it. Is it just not suitable for this hair type? Sob.

I don't brush mine. I spray it on and rub it in, it does say to brush out but I never do as I have wavy/curly hair and brushing it would turn it into frizz.

it makes my head itch

Heartsease · 06/10/2010 09:26

I think I'd be scared not to brush in case I had that grey look, like I was playing my aged self in a crummy film.

Katy1Katy, that is interesting, but also a shame! I hate sticking my head under the shower on a winter morning.

I've used batiste or klorane, and have straight, fine hair and both work well. But - generally the "style" I go for after using the dry shampoo is "messy up do". It doesn't look good enough to be straight and down.

Heartsease · 06/10/2010 10:54

Oh good point. I can do messy up do -- in fact I am going through a massive bun phase (i.e. a massive phase... the bun is average-sized). I'll rethink my strategies. I feel quite determined.

The thing I find off putting with dry shampoo is the smell. I tried Tony & Guy and James Brown, both of which smell like a cheap deodorant to me. Can anyone recommend one that doesn't reek?

AvadaKedavra · 06/10/2010 12:50

Batiste have a few with scents on them, Fresh, Rose, Tropical...ummm.... a disco one...

They are all pretty nice smelling especially the tropical one :)

AbsofCroissant · 06/10/2010 12:55

The klorane one doesn't smell, but is very powdery, so you have to be careful to brush it out, otherwise it looks like you're 90.

Corkscrewkisses · 06/10/2010 12:57

Are the Batiste and Klorane widely available (like in Boots?) if so, I will stock up next time I'm in the UK...

AbsofCroissant · 06/10/2010 12:59

Yes, all over the place. You can also get handbag sized ones of the batiste.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 06/10/2010 13:05

Batiste came out top of some magazine survey recently - I hope it works as I bought myself some today to save me the ordeal that is washing and blowdrying my thick, wavy hair. Will watch this thread with interest Smile

Corkscrewkisses · 06/10/2010 13:06

Oooh excellent.

bunnymother · 06/10/2010 13:08

I love the Batiste tropical one - makes my hair bigger and bouncier. Dream product for me as hair normally sad and lifeless. Perks it up. Hopefully makes it cleaner, but I care more about how it looks.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 06/10/2010 13:12

Oh help - Batiste makes your hair look bigger?? Maybe I won't then - just what I don't need Grin

WilfShelf · 06/10/2010 13:19

Brushing or combing with kind of fine bristle thing doesn't work for me: it does look awful smoothed down. I have layers anyhow so a bit of a ruffle afterwords is enough. I tend only to use it on parting areas and around hairline, then sort of rub in with fingers. Then I tip my head forward and give the whole shebang a damn good ruffle to get rid of excess. I keep ruffling till I don't look dusty. Tends to just soak up any grease, give body but not look like there's any produce on there. Hair is ever so slightly duller than normal but crucially not stuck to head like chip pan!

Heartsease · 06/10/2010 13:36

"I keep ruffling till I don't look dusty" Grin

I'm going to adopt your line as my dry shampoo mantra, WilfShelf. The bristle thing is exactly my problem.

I love the Batiste one - love the smell and the fact that you don't always have to wash the next day as you do with some dry shampoos. I can usually use it two days in a row.

I also don't brush it out. I tend to spray it under the hair to give me some volume and then around the edges of my hair. I don't use loads so don't get that aged look.

I noticed in TK Maxx the other week that they had all the James Brown stuff for sale. Didn't really look to see what products they had but there were lots of different sized bottles and containers. May be worth a nosy katy if you have a TKM near you?

shodatin · 06/10/2010 13:51

I've only used Batiste, which was a bit disappointing as previously I'd just used a sprinkle of talc and it doesn't seem any better

HonestyBox · 06/10/2010 14:45

The brown or black coloured Batiste are fab, leave you with less grey as they put a slight colour into the product.

I got fed up with Batiste (made my hair all witchy) but recently found Charles Worthington 'Front Row Refresh and Revive' - really good! Nice smell and it actually works. I can now just wash my hair every third day (normally it would be every day). Got it in Boots.

Heartsease · 06/10/2010 15:38

At lunchtime I bought Batiste 'nude' which is not in a spray bottle. I think that aerosol cloud was part of what I didn't like. This seems more like something you can focus. Will report back!
