I like them on other people but they just don't seem to suit me and I find the extra bits annoying.

moragbellingham · 05/10/2010 14:40

I'm thinking of going to my local dry-cleaner and levelling a couple of things up!
They annoy me so much.

southeastastra · 05/10/2010 14:40

yes they are

omnishambles · 05/10/2010 14:42

I was going to come on and say I like them in skirts/dresses - have a few Anglomania ones that work nicely but you're talking about cardies so shall bow out - am not a fan of the waterfall [?] cardi or whatever its called no...

GrimmaTheNome · 05/10/2010 14:42

Yes. Some of them just look as if they've been stretched.

catinthehat2 · 05/10/2010 14:43

They suck.

You are correct.

polyhymnia · 05/10/2010 14:45

Hate them, hate them - and waterfall cardies too. Thought perhaps they just didn't suit me because I'm large, but short slender friend finds them unflattering too. Glad to see others not fans and hope the current enthusiasm on part of some retailers will pass.

Heartsease · 05/10/2010 14:45

Yes. Especially on cardigans which look nice and long and drapey at the front, then veer upward at the back to frame your bum like a baboon.

aquavit · 05/10/2010 14:47

they are, indeed, rubbish. On knitwear, skirts, anything except a nice man's shirt which, obviously, should have a nice curved rear hemline (which naturally gets tucked in anyway).

aquavit · 05/10/2010 14:48

Oh and tailcoats. They should be asymmetric too. And never ever worn by women.

catinthehat2 · 05/10/2010 14:54

Can I just say handkerchief hem skirts as well?

Not worth a thread of their own, but I think that anyone who would like to enjoy a 5 second hate should also get the opportunity

omnishambles · 05/10/2010 14:57

No you may not cat - some of them are, in fact, ok (though I dont actually have this dress) here

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 05/10/2010 14:58

The jumpers/cardies y look like they have had an accident in the washing machine/spin dryer. And Handkerchief hem skirts just look like rags. Esp when teemed with Ugs or Crocs!!

Oumasrusks · 05/10/2010 15:03

I hate them. They look so untidy and I don't think are flattering at all.

HonestyBox · 05/10/2010 15:04

I love asymmetry, have cardigan, skirt and dress like this - all saints here I come.

polyhymnia · 05/10/2010 15:04

Yes, the skirts are awful too - v. disappointing on occasions I've seen something that looks appealing on hanger only to get it out and see dread 'handkerchief' hem.

Schroeder · 05/10/2010 15:06

yuck and they're always long too, which doesn't do anything for short-arse like me Smile

catinthehat2 · 05/10/2010 15:14

Hmm, I'll let you have the Anglomania if you are enormously tall & skinny. But that's it my friend.

I had the misfortune to see a brown tweed handkerchiefy number (2 clashing fabrics) combined with a netty underskirt on a short lady with ample behind and uggish boots.

Not directional, not punky, not stylish, just Helena Bonham Carter does Per Una. Confused

polyhymnia · 05/10/2010 16:11

In fact, there has been an outbreak of assymmetric hems in M ans S over last year or so, thus rendering some tops, etc, which would otherwise have done as basics, unwearable. Ordered one by mistake and looked as if off to a Hallowe'en party.

As said, if anyone can carry off, it's the young, tall and skinny. Yet they are favoured by 'Plus Size' retailers - not only the cheap ones who have masses of 'handkerchief' tops in garish colours, but also pricy Spirito di Artigiano, a particular bete noire of mine.

Don't know what their thinking is. Is it that wearing these rubbish things will make the fat and no longer young (both apply to me, btw) 'fun' and 'funky' ?? They most ceretainly don't imo - they make them look like Hyacinth Bucket/ ships in full sail/ frumpy.

Yes, they are shite (though I love All Saints when they can do things in nice STRAIGHT LINES)

echt · 05/10/2010 17:50

polyhymniaI think you're right about the no-longer- young aspect. Asymmetry has been raging in women's clothes in my bit of Oz for years, and I always associate it with the older lady who wants to look a bit wacky.

It's in all aspects of clothing, and at its worst looks like Per Una/Hallowe'en, as has been noted. My DD scathingly said it made everyone look like extras from Lord of the Rings.

Disclaimer ; I am an older woman, like to look a little different, but balk at the Oz "uniform" for my age group.

omnishambles · 05/10/2010 18:08

Yes there is a difference between non-symmetrical and just channelling a witch.

miche8 · 05/10/2010 20:39

i like those waterfall cardigans, they actually make me feel slimmer, i think its a flattering shape for apples. Hope i havent been making a huge mistake.

brimfull · 05/10/2010 22:24

glad you all agree with me
waterfall cardis lok shite as well, as if I you're trying to hide something but actually you just look likeyou're ..well trying to hide summat
