Tracksuits as everyday wear

What do you think?

Do they ever look good?
Does it send a message that you've given up?
Are they ok so long as you don't do a Croydon facelift as well?

Sports wear is only suitable going to or returning from exercise.

AbsofCroissant · 05/10/2010 12:31

If you're say, a professional athlete, yeah, go for it.

Otherwise, just no.

ramonaquimby · 05/10/2010 12:31

why would you do it?

Gretl · 05/10/2010 12:34

Phew. It's not just me, then.

I have just watched seven women and two men walk past my window, wearing an array of sports gear. The women were absolutely bloody terrifying looking: heavy-set, long lank dyed hair, unwashed. The men have this sort of swagger that I suppose is learned, not innate.

People are free to dress how they please. I understand that. But I also think: WHY would you do this to yourself?!

It seems to me that the desire to wear sportswear is almost always in inverse proportion to the amount of exercise taken.

Gretl · 05/10/2010 12:40

Agree.

It does look comfy, though

Slippery slope.....Grin

Gretl · 05/10/2010 12:47

Just one elasticated waistband....? One doesn't count, does it?

Never. It really annoys me seeing people travelling abroad like that as well. You always know where the British planes land at foreign airports.

Lauriefairycake · 05/10/2010 12:53

Have a look at the roll-top trousers in the White Company or the MeandEm website - they will satisfy your desire for 'comfy' in modal or cashmere Grin

I wear them at the weekend around the house - I'm very keen on 'leisurewear' at home.

headinclouds101 · 05/10/2010 12:56

I wear track suit bottoms in the house because they are comfortable and I can move around freely in them when doing chores.
I would not be seen DEAD in them outside the house.Don't even like putting the rubbish out with them on. Fairly hate it if i have to answer the door to anyone - even the postie if I am wearing offending item.

Slippery slope indeed.

Havingkittens · 05/10/2010 12:57

The funniest thing is that the people who seem to spend the most amount of time in tracksuits are the least likely to be using them for their proper purpose.

My OH calls them romper suits which sums it up really.

Gretl · 05/10/2010 13:01

Oh PMSL at romper suits

Round here it is such a scary look for some reason.

I'm no fashion expert, but think they look awful. Particularly if they are of the variety that have something written across the arse.

I'm not sure what it is about my area, but we also have a glut of men who wear grey sweatpants everywhere for every occasion. I can't explain it, but it makes me feel a bit ill.

Gretl · 05/10/2010 13:03

Yes the grey sweatpants that you can see their cock through Shock
With accompanying bandy-legged walk.

Sorry, TBE. That sounds very hard.

Its normally worn by obese people who are clearly not doing any exercise.

I agree, only suitable when going to or returning from exercise

pinkthechaffinch · 05/10/2010 13:50

Ha my 30 something, quite-fit PE teacher used to wear trackie bottoms (navy) you could clearly see his cock through Shock

I was only 8! Mr Hennessey, if you're reading this, you taught me more than you realised!

mippy · 05/10/2010 17:51

I grew up in a northern town where sportswear is virtually a town uniform. I genuinely got stared at when I went into the DHSS in proper clothes. One non-uniform day everyone turned up in them, and if you didn't like them, you were sad. I remember a period in my teen years when my friend's love interests all were grease-haired tracksuited tits, and she took to wearing five sovereign rings. My middle nephew is a self-labelled chav and I can't believe how expensive those things are - £90 for something with Helly Hansen on the side.

I broke my foot two years ago and all that would fit were my BF's trackie bottoms. I felt so scruffy and crappy wearing them each day. Maybe because I do not have an athletic figure, maybe because I really hate synthetic fibres.

mippy · 05/10/2010 17:52

TBE - I do know people who wear sweatpants because it is so tricky to get clothing in certain sizes. Doesn't make sense to me though if you have other options.

echt · 05/10/2010 17:59

Agree about the general naffness of it all. I won't even wear trainers unless actually going out for a run. even walking the dog is done in walking shoes. So anal.:o

Fimbo · 05/10/2010 18:02

Tracksuits tucked into fake uggs, is my pet hate.
