Inexpensive foundation that's just as good as the posh stuff?

Does it exist?

I've just run out of some lovely Chanel foundation which I can't afford to replace.

I know I won't be able to find anything as good for my budget (£10-£15 max) but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a half decent foundation at this price?

I had a max factor foundation prior to the lovely Chanel stuff but it was really claggy. I have dry skin so need something a bit lighter.

I'm 39 weeks pregnant and hugely fat and lazy v tired so can't really face trawling round the make up counters which is why I'm asking you style ladies to help me out!

Thanks in advance.

I've mentioned a few of my favorites on some of the other foundation threads but some of the ones I really like are - Chanel's Vitalumiere or Lift Lumiere, Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra, or Teint Miracle, Dior's Nude, Estee Lauder Double Wear if you need a lot of coverage, MAC Face and Body for a natural look and also does a great job of evening out arms and legs with eveningwear, or their Studio Sculpt for heavier coverage.

As I've also mentioned elsewhere, Lancome samples are very generous. They call it a 7 day trial, I'd say you can eek about 10 days out of it! You could go in and ask to try a couple of different formulations to see which work best for you or go to two different Lancome counters too Wink

I would say, if you want to order cheaper products online you should try them on counter first. It's almost impossible to get the right colour judging by your computer monitor and then you will have wasted good money.

snoozathon · 03/10/2010 18:19

Maybe I'm dreaming about the Clarins one being £14 as I can't find it online for less than £22!

Here it is - it's the True Comfort one.

FrameyMcFrame · 03/10/2010 19:06

I agree with Maybelene foundations being crap.
They are by turn greasy and lumpy anddrying on the skin.
I always mix foundation with moisturiser, had a really expensive Nars foundation but I've gone back to the old Rimmel one as I actually prefer it.
I like really light foundation though, I find tinted moisturisers a rip off for the quantity you get.

MaudOHara · 03/10/2010 19:08

Havingkittens I'm going to have to start stalking you for your knowledge Smile

Celery · 03/10/2010 19:35

You can often get good deals on high end brands on eBay.

Diorskin Nude is the only foundation I've tried that I've repurchased, and will continue to do so.

Even the mega expensive eclat opulent by By Terry wasn't as good as this, for me.

moragbellingham · 03/10/2010 19:43

How do you buy Virgin Vie stuff. There used to be shops around didn't there?
I don't think I'd like to buy without trying first.

MrsSaxon · 03/10/2010 19:44

I was in the same boat, alas my lovely estee lauder days are behind me. Grin

I found This and its pretty good.

moragbellingham · 03/10/2010 19:45

Sorry Hairy I forgot to say - I bought the No.7 tinted moisturiser over summer and it was OK (with £5 off voucher)

moragbellingham · 03/10/2010 19:46

Wow, that's cheap!
It is very good make-up to. I used to buy the cheek blush and lip glosses.

MrsSaxon · 03/10/2010 19:52

I have just ordered some more in case they run out, it really is good stuff, great site too.

Schroeder · 03/10/2010 19:54

Bourgeois 10 hours sleep for me, nice and light and not too drying. I consider bourgeois posh thoughGrin

Maybeline is always to dry for me, I suppose it's not made for us pale English roses.

Rimmel's texture is ok, but I can never find a shade to match my skin I suppose it's like cheap jeans; it's always the pigment that gives it away.

BelligerentGhoul · 03/10/2010 20:00

I like Max Factor - the one called Second Skin or Perfect Skin or something. L'Oreal do one with serum in, which is okay.

I didn't get on with the Revlon Photofit one at all - it made me look dead.

I tried a tiny sample of Bare Minerals recently and liked it a lot. I suspect it's not cheap though.

Speckledeggy · 03/10/2010 20:17

Barbara Daly from Tesco gets my vote. Was previously using Bourjois until they changed their packaging and I couldn't work out which new product I should now be buying!

BD was recommended on MN. I bought a little bottle for £6.00 ages ago and it's still going strong.

Bunbaker · 03/10/2010 20:32

"I've never used expensive either, it's out of my price range, but I've tried every cheap and mid range product on the market!
I'm a total make up/skin cream/anti ageing crap product junky"

Hi mugglewump
Spot on!
I'm like you about cosmetics and toiletries. I can spend hours in Boots/The Bodyshop.

I was given a free makeover in The Bodyshop a few months ago and bought their minerals foundation, having always been very sceptical about it. I really like it. It is a bit of a faff to do compared to tinted moisturiser, but it looks fab when I have the time to do it properly. I also need good daylight to make sure I am not overdoing it.

hairymelons · 03/10/2010 23:00

MrsSaxon, that is a bargain! The concealers are really cheap too. I'm just a bit worried about picking the right colour. Which do you get?

MrsSaxon · 04/10/2010 09:53

I went for 113, it was a bit light but blended in really well.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/10/2010 09:56

To be honest, I would recommed that you just go without eating for a couple of days and buy the Chanel one.

I have tried some cheap foundations over the years, some of which initially were brilliant, however NONE of them are any good compared to those which you pay £30+ for.

Mind you I have sensitive skin which flares up, so am influenced by that.

Whitethorn · 04/10/2010 10:19

I 2nd that. Good foundation is vital, mascaras, blushers etc can all be bought cheaply but cheap foundation shows (on me anyway)

The No 7 mineral foundation is great - I used it when preg and still do so. I was a bit dubious as my skin tends to be very dry, but it brushes on beautifully, never looks flaky and evens out skin in a magical fashion.

Use some Superdrug Natural High underneath (cheap version of Beauty Flash Balm) and you'll look divine.

glittery · 04/10/2010 10:28

Bourjois is made in the same factory as Chanel so its a pretty safe bet but i have noticed a lot of Avon products are now packaged suprisingly similarly to Chanel stuff particularly the foundation and the eyeshadows.
im using the Avon Ideal Shade foundation right now and its pretty good

Havingkittens · 04/10/2010 10:38

"Bourjois is made in the same factory as Chanel"

Noooooooo!

Please read my comments on this on the other "Foundation threads"

They are OWNED by Chanel, not MADE by Chanel. This it the 3rd time in 2 days I've read a comment like this on the Style & Beauty forum by 3 different people Sad

And just because packaging is similar it doesn't meant the product is!

There is a reason for the price difference, higher quality ingredients, more extensive research and development etc.

ZacharyQuack · 04/10/2010 10:45

Revlon Age Defying Spa foundation (in a tube with built-in brush) is very good.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/10/2010 10:49

Bourjois is awful imo - sends my skin lizard like.

I would so loveto be able to wear Chanel however my skin is too pink.

By Terry Eclat Opulent the best foundation ever, however it bloody well should be as it costs £100.

stropicana · 04/10/2010 10:51

Feel unique have 15 percent off today only and have a huge range with free delivery. I like the mineral make-up but defintley need a primer underneath if you have dry skin. Smile Code is celebrate15 BTW.
