Does anyone dye their own hair blonde?

CountessVonKnackerstein · 26/09/2010 19:15

As mine seems to go Ginger anytime I dye it myself does anyone have a suggestion of which dye type to use??

I usually have half-head highlights which not only does the job but also dries out my roots (this is a good thing:)) however I can't afford it now.

(Thought about model nights but they are on the evenings I work)

Any ideas would be great, thank you

I think the trick is to go with an ash blonde first. You need something blue-based to knock out the orange, then you can dye whatever shade of blonde over that. This worked for me in the past.

theslumbertaker · 26/09/2010 20:04

depending on how dark your hair is, you can always use a prelightener first. basically it is just bleach, which takes your hair up to a very very light blonde (but quite brassy). you would then need to use either a permanent or semi-permanent in a shade you like over the top. otherwise, i agree with painsnail, def go for an ashy blonde. do not try to go lighter than 1-2 shades with home dye, unless you use a prelightener. you will not be happy with the results otherwise.

another option is to try one of those home highlighting kits. the l'oreal '' one is quite good. i wouldn't recommend the caps that come with them, but if you have someone who is willing to learn how to do the weaving that stylists usually do, you are sorted. my mum trained herself up from youtube clips, and used to do great highlights on me!

CountessVonKnackerstein · 26/09/2010 21:23

What do you do with roots (dirty dark blonde) if you are pre lightening hair? I don't want stripes :o

i'm afraid it would be pretty high maintenance. you would have to prelighten and then dye the roots each time. highlights easier. either way, you need a helper.

CountessVonKnackerstein · 26/09/2010 22:29

Thank you....:) I think I'm too scared to do by myself now :o haha!

Please don't A natural non brassy blonde is v difficult to DIY

shoofly · 27/09/2010 11:00

I dye my friends hair every 6 weeks or so - Her natural colour is a fairly dark brown. Alternate btween ash blonde and baby blonde in the L'oreal ones - I think its recital or preference. I work though the roots with 2/3 of the colour (and a brush) and leave it on for approx half an hour - then pull the rest of the colour through to the ends for 10 mins. It is never brassy and the hairdresser who cuts her hair always complements it! - I think you really need a helper, but if you can find someone to help, I'd give it a go.

aquavit · 27/09/2010 12:34

What is your base colour?

I do my own highlights (have medium blonde hair naturally) and I like them better than when the hairdressers do them (less stripy). My favourite kit is the Garnier nutrisse one in the palest colour, it comes out a pale creamy blonde, not at all brassy, and I like the brush application.

I think if you are trying to go a lot lighter than your original colour though it would be more difficult.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/09/2010 12:39

Don't do it.

DON'T DO IT

DON'T DO IT

I did about a year ago, my hair went orange and I endure jokes at work re 'who's been tangoed' and had to take half a day off work and go and spend £120 at the hairdresser in order to have it corrected.

TrinityRhino · 27/09/2010 12:43

cant be anything but whore blonde Grin

I'm naturally a manky brown

I use live platinum

gardeningmum05 · 27/09/2010 12:47

superdrug home brand..cheap as chips and great!!
and ladies, its not hair dying its colour enhancement {smile}

neytiri · 27/09/2010 12:52

i do. always go for a shade which is ash in tone, if you want a golden blonde, it's best done at a salon than at home. ash shades will stay blonde looking for longer, the problem with home dyes is red is the strongest pigment, so will take the most to the hair, which is why it can go orange looking. also as they fade, the red stays the longest so again, it will go more orange over time.

there are some reviews of blonde hair dyes here

sapphireblue · 27/09/2010 13:04

I've been dying mine for years using clairol nice n easy......I was baby blonde for a few years, then ash blonde for a few, and now dark ash blonde.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/09/2010 13:07

Well what the bloody hell are you lot doing to not end up with brassy locks?

i am naturally mousy anyway, thought it would be easy, got something called Frosted Blonde and it went bloody amber traffic light colour.

I just looked at myself and cried.

I wish i could die it myself, I bloody hate and loathe spending the best part of £100 getting highlights, and the 3 boring hours at the haircresser as well. Whta a waste of time.

neytiri · 27/09/2010 13:27

i don't get on with nice & easy, my hair doesn't like that brand!, mainly use l'oreal excellence creme in ash blonde, comes out as a quite a natural looking, neutral mid blonde colour on me.

theslumbertaker · 27/09/2010 13:40

i'm no expert, but i think the outcome depends on the tones that you have in your natural hair colour. so for example, two people may have hair roughly of the same 'level', ie. a 5 or 6 which would be med-light brown. but one may have warmer tones (golden) and the other cooler (ashy). i think the diy blonde thing is more risky if you already have gold ginger in your hair. this is the problem i have. i tend to get the tango effect, as i have a warmish brown colour in the first place. unless i use a prelightener.

aquavit · 28/09/2010 11:53

I have quite a lot of red in my hair and there are some products that have made it more brassy than others, so I think that different brands make a difference. It has to be proper BLEACH to get good results(ammonia etc).

Also leave it on for a good long time!
