Clothing alterations - how much?

I have three pairs of trousers I need hemming. I normally do it myself but I am busy and these are expensive trousers so I want a decent job doing. They are smart wide leg trousers so it should be a simple enough job.

How much should I expect to pay? There is an independent alterations shop on my local high street but no price list.

Thank you.

£8 per trouser where I live- same from lovely chap on market as in an alterations shop. £10 from elderly dry-cleaner who cocked it up.

ask in the shop
also ask at Jigsaw if you have one locally- they are usually happy to recommend their alterations person.

Thanks!

No Jigsaw here, we are too poor and too Northern I suspect!

£8 sounds a lot, for the north anyway. Ask in dry cleaners etc. There are a couple of sewing alterations shops in my northern market town, don't know where you are.

If it's anything like the Scottish village I live in, they'll charge a fortune, tell you they won't be ready for at least a week, then when you turn up they won't be ready/won't be able to find them/won't have taken the right amount off. I hate those bitches with a passion, but being a short arse, and them being the only alterations shop I can find I'm stuffed.

Bitter? Me? Nooooooooo Grin

I paid £22 for the hem to be taken up on one dress, and the armhole was too big on another,so she has to take it in from the arm to waist. Thought that was ok.

moragbellingham · 26/09/2010 11:30

I pay £10 virtually everywhere I've been for lined pairs or single layered.
In London.
I've had a real bodge job done once though but luckily only on some cheaper trousers. DH brought them to me in hosp as my going home wear so couldn't go back and complain.

Try with one pair first and see if you like the results.

AnyFuleKno · 26/09/2010 13:52

So expensive, I'm in the wrong business! Send em to me I'll do it for a fiver and a packet of skittles

moragbellingham · 26/09/2010 16:51

It is expensive and in my head I have to add a tenner onto the price of any pair of trousers.

For Xmas/birthday I am asking for a sewing machine.

AnyFuleKno · 26/09/2010 17:59

john lewis have a fab little machine for £49 at the moment

moragbellingham · 26/09/2010 22:26

That sounds about as much as I would want to spend for trouser turn-ups. Thanks.

KristinaM · 28/09/2010 02:19

I pay 7 for jeans and 8£ for trousers. That's in scotland

geordieminx · 28/09/2010 14:12

Oooh could you message me and tell me where Kristina.... I need to find a new place... on the verge of injuring one of the cretins ladies at current place Grin

doggydaft · 28/09/2010 16:53

£6 for trousers and £8 for jeans, also in Scotland.

BikeRunSki · 28/09/2010 16:54

£6 I think in Penistone, S Yorks.

maize · 28/09/2010 17:58

I paid £14 for three pairs to be hemmed on 3 for 3 offer so seems I got a good deal :)
