Blackheads on a 9 yr old girl

My 9 yr old daughter has a few blackheads on her chin. How do you get rid of them, do you squeeze, leave alone or is there a good product on the market? I'm worried if I squeeze they may open the pores up.

I have a boy the same age with blackheads on his nose.
Washes regulary but also looking for a good product / advise Smile

coatgate · 23/09/2010 11:52

DON'T SQUEEZE! Don't know of any products though.

FranSanDisco · 23/09/2010 11:55

Dd is almost 10 yo. She now uses a face wash by Simple and a cleansing sponge from bodyshop for the areas where she gets blackheads i.e chin and nose.

CookieMonster · 23/09/2010 11:55

I am watching this thread for advice also .. my 9 year old dd has blackheads and sometimes proper spots on her nose and chin. I make sure she washes regularly and at the moment I have cut chocolate out of her diet to see if that helps .. 3 weeks in and it's not :-(.

Any advice on products suitable for a child would be gratefully received.

CookieMonster · 23/09/2010 11:57

Fran, does that work? Is her skin better?

BooKangaWonders · 23/09/2010 11:59

I've got my 9 yr old the Liz Earle cleanse and polish. She probably uses it 2 or 3 times a week. Just like washing her face but better!

pilates · 23/09/2010 12:03

Thats funny have just ordered Liz Earle cleanse and polish for myself, I'll try her with it and report back.

I have just found a brilliant skincare range at Boots which is called Good Things - www.goodthingsbeauty.com if you are interested. Their anti spot range has worked like a miracle on dd.

Mandy3 · 23/09/2010 12:09

Have just looked again at the Good Things website and I see it is also free from parabens etc which to me is the most important thing

FranSanDisco · 23/09/2010 12:13

CookieMonster, her skin is better but she still gets blackheads on her chin though not as many. I'm going to look at the Good Things website as well Grin.

I have the same problem with my just 10 year old DD. Asked a pharmacist for advice and she suggested to wash her face with just water each evening and to then use the "Simple" toner to clear away any remaining dirt. Have to say her face is a lot better after following this daily routine for a couple of weeks. Simple seems to be quite mild and has had no drying effect either.

I am trying to use as little product as possible on her as other than the odd blackhead on her nose and forehead she has beautiful peaches and cream skin - envious!

CookieMonster · 23/09/2010 14:11

Good Things look interesting - might get her the Mango and Blueberry Purifying Cleanser to try (actually sounds good enough to eat!).

Thanks everyone for the ideas.

Have you tried supplements - Omega oils in particular.

My brother & I used to get blackheads on our legs when we were kids!!!! Bout 8-10 I reckon. Thinking about this as an adult I'm pretty sure it had something to do with an essential oil imbalance/shortfall.

Hello, my daughter, 7 years old has blackheads on her nose and is concerned about their spread. How do we get rid of them? What facial hygene is best for that age. Currently she only washes her face with water only, no soap. Please advise. Very grateful for your time.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/10/2015 23:08

I would try cetaphil cleanser - rub in with your hands, wipe off then rinse. Suitable for sensitive skin and cheap as chips it's been great for my old skin and ds (9) uses it if his skin looks clogged.

pdxs · 05/10/2015 00:55

when I was a teen, dr reccommended neutrogena amber bar... I think water only not helpful as not ridding skin of sebum (my knowledge is based on working for a skincare manufacturer in past)

for 7-9 yr old girls, good things or similar boots own label is designed for younger skins. Would go facewash/face bar 2x day - rinse well, scrub 1x week (with you supervising), & maybe moisturise

Squeeze/not: if left, can become spots. Squeezing can leave scars... better to gently use a scrub to remove (and if needed, perhaps also do a gentle steam at home with bowl of water & towel)

for older teens: clean & clear/neutrogena etc would be suitable, but i would hesitate for a 9 yr old (more 11-12)

La Roche Posay Effaclar, from Boots, or Sam Farmer facewash from SpaceNK if you are near a branch. Both highly rated by teenage DS!

Thank you all, got the good thing from boots today and started on this. The consultant in boots was so bad! Looked at her and asked if it hurt but she was referring to her birthmark between her eyebrows which we are trying to play down when noted. Thinking that we need a more permanent face hygene routine instead of just water and wander if the good things from boots is good for the long run. Thanks again!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 06/10/2015 09:39

Absolutely LRP Effaclar. Has transformed dd's skin.

DingbatsFur · 06/10/2015 09:53

I bought the Good Things mango cleanser a couple of weeks ago because I was fed up with the latent spots on my chin.
Fantastic stuff.
Skin is now clear and clean, spots reduced, redness reduced. Yesterday I went without makeup as the weather was so bad and I didn't care. I am in my late 30s though. It rocks.

Carpaccio · 06/10/2015 10:06

Are they blackheads or sebaceous filaments?

If blackheads, then they should to be removed.
If sebaceous filaments, then they are completely normal, shouldn't be removed, and you can prevent getting more by cleansing every day and maybe even using an acid toner.

You can see sebaceous filaments here: www.livestrong.com/article/546911-difference-between-blackheads-sebaceous-filaments/
Here's pictures of both: www.epicbeautyguide.com/wp-content/uploads/Blackheads-vs-Sebaceous-Filaments.jpg

My mum used to squeeze my sebaceous filaments - and I think that has contributed to thinking my skin was awful for years even when it wasn't that bad.

For products, I'd suggest something cetaphil for cleansing morning and evening - I'd use it with a flannel or a Clarisonic (but the Clarisonic is quite expensive). If you want/need more, something like Pixi Glow Tonic after cleansing - once a day should be enough.
A good moisturiser will also be nice. It depends on the skin type, so I can't recommend anything specific, but generally you shouldn't get too harsh products as they can cause loads of issues too.

januarysunshine · 14/10/2015 04:09

Thank you Carpaccio. It was exactly sebaceous filament which I have never heard about! Now can do more focused reading on it since the girl in question is only 7 and also has tiny acne looking like spots on her chin now as well! Thanks again.

ginorwine · 15/10/2015 15:35

Hello, can you please recommend any episode from the David Attenborough's which has no animal death. I know it's part of nature but would rather not watch it tonight. Any tips please much appreciated.
