Am considering getting my embarrassing old lady chin hairs sorted out. Wondering if anyone has had it done? Is it painful, does it actually work permanently?

Many years ago a friend of mine had her arm pits done and they have stayed hair free. It cost a fair bit but can't have been masses because she wouldn't have been able to afford masses. She said it wasn't too painful at all. She might be hardy though!

Today's London Groupon is a deal on IPL, if anyone's interested....

I'm having it done on my upper lip and chin at the moment.

I've had about 4 sessions and it has started to thin out. It does sting, but it is bearable. My place gives me an ice-pack to help numb the pain and they do it slowly.

Most places do a test patch - my place does a test patch on the area you have done, so its essentially a free session.

Ooh have booked a consultation for tomorrow. Am dreading having to let my chin hairs grow in a Nanny McFee style before having it done. I too have a zz top tache so will consider that next.

shoppingbags Are you still there? Could you tell us how you went on?

How does regrowth look? If you were having upper lip is it all done at once? Then is it monthly or do you have to wait for regrowth?

whoneedssleepanyway · 06/01/2011 11:35

i had it done a while ago on upper lip, didn't solve the problem thinned it but it doesn't work on fair hairs (or it didn't at the time) and also they explained to me that hair growth is in cycles to if the hair follicle is active when they do the treatment it will work on that but other hair follicles could become active later on if there are hormonal changes etc....

i found it kind of felt like someone twanging a rubber band against your face.

It took approx 8 sessions to nuke my chin hair. Total cost was just under £600.

Depends how hairy you are and what the cause is but it's very effective on some in the long term and on others it's just a more effective method of managing it on an ongoing basis, rather than shaving or waxing.

I had a course of 6 treatments a few years ago. It looked good whilst I was having it done but a year or so later I was hairier than ever Shock. Frustratingly, although they told me it wouldn't work on fair hair they still used it on the blonde, downier hairs as well and now they have grown back coarser and dark Angry.

I was told that if the reason is hormonal then they can't guarantee it will give permanent results as the hormones keep stimulating hair growth. I have become older (obviously) and have also been on a hormonal rollercoaster over the last 3 years or so due to 6 unsuccessful pregnancies so I suspect neither of those factors help.

I am having it done again now though courtesy of Groupon. I decided that at the price of the deal I got it would still be worth it just to have it on an ongoing basis to keep me beard free. I've had 3 treatments so far and then had to stop due to pregnancy and it all grew back. Sadly not pregnant again now so will be going back PDQ to be de-bearded again. The place where I go prefer you to have completely shaved the area for treatment so you don't have to go in looking like Che Guevara (phew!). I'd say, shave it in the meantime and then let it grow a tiny bit for your consultation just so they can see where they will be treating - although maybe call the salon you're planning to go to and double check this is ok, they may work differently to mine.

The only thing I will say, I'm not sure if it has this effect on everyone but I get a few nasty spots from it when the hair is starting to try and grow out. Either ingrown hair or inflamed follicles, I'm not sure. Still better than a beard though. Seriously, I'm like a monkey otherwise!

I've just finished a course of laser Hair removal. I bought a course of 8 treatments, but only needed to use 6 in the end.

Honestly, it's the best money I've ever spent. I have PCOS and my facial hair was worsening every year. I was having to have my chin and upper lip threaded every fortnight and I was forever tweezering wirey chin hairs.

I went to the SK:N clinic, my friend recommended me as she also started having treatment. I paid £703 for a course of 8, but that price was with a 10% discount for having PCOS (Had to produce letter from GP confirming this)and I also received £25 off for being recommended.

My last treatment was 3 weeks ago and still no regrowth. No longer getting ingrown hairs, so no scarring from that so my skin is much clearer too. I noticed a marked improvement after the third treatment. As for pain, I think if you're used to waxing or threading then your skin won't feel too much discomfort. I only felt discomfort towards end of my course, like being pinged with tiny elastic bands, but everyon's pain thresholds are different.

The treatment is quick, taking under 10 minutes for chin and upper lip. The thing I found unpleasant was the cooling system, the cold air takes your breath away if it goes up the nostrils. My Technician was very good as she'd block off my nostrils with a spatula and tell me when she was going to do a pulse, so I could also take a breath in and hold it.

Take a look at their website here If you are on Facebook, it's an idea to join their group as they give regular discounts on courses, up to 30% usually.
