I'm a home-dye virgin - help!

My hairdresser's away for a few weeks and if I don't do something about my hair soon I'll look like Philip Schofield. So, I'm about to attempt a home dye for the first time...eek! I have very, very dark brown hair with quite a lot of grey root and some old-ish bleached highlights which have been dyed over several times so aren't really obvious. I last had my roots done about 10 weeks ago. Should I just do my roots or the whole length of my hair? My hair goes below my shoulder blades. Will there be enough? Is the reccommended time accurate?

Ok this is kind of like me - I very mousey hair which can LOOK grey and when I had regrowth I did pretty much just concentrate on the roots... but I didn't have highlights. Maybe you could run the dye over the mid-section and ends of your hair too? There should definitely be enough for below shoulder blades, I always found that I had some left so even if you do choose to do the whole length (which I would say go for) then you should be fine. Recommended time I have found to be accurate but I personally left it a little longer than stated.
