Hello

I need some inspiration for a trendy yet manageable style.

I'm 36 and dress fashionably, so want a hairstyle to match, but the last few times I've been to my talented but young hairdresser, I've come away with a boring bob which looks good when I leave the salon, but due to the thickness of my hair, it nver looks good for long.

As I said, my hair is thick. Hairdressers always comment on it. It also has a wave to it. If I left it to dry naturally it would be a bush.

It's currently in a chin length bob with a growing out fringe and just looks frumpy.

HEEEEEELLLPPPPP!

I too have incredibly thick hair - even thicker at the moment due to recent pregnancy. I can't wait for that time when all the hair that hasn't fallen out during pg starts to fall out again.
I have had hard times with hairdressers in the past, but my current one is great about thinning and thinning and thinning it again. My hair tends towards straight - the wavy bits are more kinky than curly so I use straighteners to tame the bulk and add shine, rather than for poken straightness.

My hairdresser also showed me how you can use straighteners like tongs to curl or add flicky bits (technical term Smile) should I ever have the time.

If you ever see anyone with your sort of hair and a really good cut, ask them where they go. York's a big city - there are bound to be a few good hairdressers. Or try a new hairdresser every time and reassure yourself that the next one might be The One. If they're no good, at least you can cross them off your list.

Thank you everyone.

It's particularly bad today.

I washed, dried and straightened it last night as usual, and it's all flicky and weird this morning. Grrrr....

To add to my trouble, I have fuzzy regrowth all around my hairline right now from where loads fell out a couple of months ago (after having DD2). This is creating an extra layer to deal with!

Will read more about curly girl and will let it dry naturally at the weekend when I have more time to deal with it if it looks crap.

I'm sick of standing at the school gates feeling slightly embarrassed by it!

Why don't you have the yuko treatment done? My friend did this and it made her thick hair very smooth and sleek. She doesn't even need to blow dry it.

messylittlemonkey · 23/09/2010 11:20

I have thought about having the Yuko or similar, but think it could get very expensive!

I think I need to get a cut that works for me instead of trying to fight it! :o

I have very thick hair that is curly.

After years of straightening and short cuts I have decided to embrace the curls and just ensure it is in fab condition.

Mine is long now and is much easier than when I had a bob.

What do you think of Kerry Karcrash's new cut?

Her hair looks incredibly thick and this cut really seems to work well with thick hair. As your hair is already in a bob it wouldn't be a drastic change and the shorter underneath at the back would get rid of a lot of the wavy section you're struggling with. As it's pulled forward into the face with a long fringe your fuzzy post baby re-growth would be hidden.

Not a Kerry fan but she look fab with this cut. She looks so much younger.

I have hair like this and it's a nightmare. I always wear it up, never loose though I'd like to be able to.
am vaguely considering one of those brazilian blow-dry things though I know they are fiendishly expensive.

CatIsSleepy · 23/09/2010 12:17

is yuko the same as brazilian blow-dry?

messylittlemonkey · 23/09/2010 12:25

I believe they're much the same, catissleepy

I do like the of Kerry Karcrash's hair, but when ever I've asked for styles like this in the past, I've always been told it wouldn't work on my hair. Her's does look quite thick, but nothing like as thick as mine :(

It just occurred to me how pathetic it must seem, whingeing about having too thick hair. I guess if for some reason I didn't have it I wouldn't be happy either.

I sympathise, MLM, but being dissatisfied with your hair is still disheartening whether it's too thick or too thin. And at least we can get thick hair thinned - it's much harder to make thin hair look thicker.

I had just seen KK's new do and thought it lookedlike a longer version of mine. Layered bobs definitely DO work on thick hair precisely because they're layered. It may just be that you need tyo find the right hairdresser.

I spent many years with unsuitable and unflattering haircuts because I was hankering after things I couldn't have - the perfect all-one-length-Swing-Out-Sister bob, hair that looked good with no blow drying... these days I need a good cut, anti-frizz serum, finger dry it straightish then a few minutes with the straighteners. But I really have to make the effort to do my hair because my instinct is not to bother.

The other thing that worked for me was very short hair, but that was when I was more elfin that fairy elephant. Have you considered a crop?

inveteratenamechanger · 23/09/2010 13:34

I have similar hair to yours and have a layered bob with a fringe. Not a million miles away from KK's actually.

I get my hair cut at Tony and Guy, and I think it is part of their standard repertoire. The hairdresser does a fair bit of thinning.

I straighten the fringe, and let the rest go curly. I really like it, and have had loads of compliments. I used to have long hair, all one length to weigh it down, and when I look at old photos now it just looks dreadful!

PandaEis · 23/09/2010 13:43

my hair is VERY thick and wavy and i have a longer version of the POBSmile it works really well and is very easy to manage as it takes away alot of the bulk.

under NO circumstances would i recommend thinning out thick hair simply because as the cut grows out the thinned bits of hair bulk out dramatically and make the hair look ALOT thicker than usual. i used to get this done and now i just get a good cut with layers and use my straighteners over the topSmile
