Has anyone put off buying new clothes until they lose weight?

And then discover that they have been using that excuse for years and the weight continues to pile on?

OP posts:
reptile · 21/09/2010 16:07

yes - I have 2 outfits that I have worn to death

CoteDAzur · 21/09/2010 16:09

No, but I should have. Now I have half a wardrobe of clothes in XL and L whereas I now wear M and even S.

ShinyAndNew · 21/09/2010 16:10

Yes. Until recently. Then I realised if I buy new clothes and then shrink out of them it is a great excuse to buy yet more new clothes. Unfortunately I have trouble with the shrinking part. But I am starting running with my sister tomorrow and we are starting to go to the gym next week. Apparently.

laloony · 21/09/2010 16:12

yup, so far lost 10lbs and wont buy anything new til i get my 1st stone off.

funkychunkymunky · 21/09/2010 16:12

OP - 10 months since DD was born and I've got 2 pairs of jeans and 3 T shirts. I'll surely lose weight soon Confused

funkychunkymunky · 21/09/2010 16:13

I didn't even wear T shirts til she was born...

Yes me. I have 2 pairs of jeans and a few t-shirts. I don't even have a coat that fits ffs Confused

I just need to win the lottery so I can add to my wardrobe!

Ronaldinhio · 21/09/2010 16:34

nope but I only have maternity clothing and the non pregnant thin stuff
nothing for the current milking moo stage fuelled by 100 packets of biscuits
also was my arse this wide after the other babies?

akhems · 21/09/2010 16:36

Yes, but now I've lost 15stones and I have no idea what to wear :/

Ronaldinhio · 21/09/2010 16:39

15 or 1.5??

Niecie · 21/09/2010 17:18

No. But I probably should have done. Instead I buy cheap stuff on the basis it doesn't have to last long because I will be thinner soon.

Until recently that hasn't been true but finally got my arse in gear and have started losing.

bethjeff · 21/09/2010 18:06

I really need to start losing weight because I'm doing the whole 'Im not buying clothes until I'm a decent size' and then not really bothering my arse about it.

I got my holiday photos back the other day and was more than a tad devastated.

It's awful because I get so depressed about it that I cannot bring myself to do anything but that is obviously not going to help me lose weight!

I don't have a coat that fits either so when it's rainy I've been running around in one of DH's jackets.

I go back to work soon and they are going to be Shock as I was fairly glam pre-pregnancy.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 21/09/2010 18:51

I've been doing (or not doing) this for the last 3 years - had 2 stone to lose, keep losing 1/2 st then taking ages to lose any more.

Don't know if it's a good idea or not - although I've bought lots more lately, since getting within 1/2 stone of target weight. Not sure that was a good idea since I re-gained most of that at the holiday buffet this summer!

anchovies · 21/09/2010 18:57

I did this for a while then started taking a bit of pride in my appearance, got seriously into buying clothes, started running and now can't stop shopping (and am 4 stone lighter!)

akhems · 22/09/2010 04:49

Ronaldinhio fifteen stones.

I find now that I don't know who I am or how I'm supposed to dress... When I was fat it was just a case of finding whatever would fit and cover up the bulk but now I think it's much more difficult because there's so much choice and I've no idea of what my 'style' is or should be Confused

missmelly · 22/09/2010 05:07

15 stones! wow!
well done

akhems · 22/09/2010 13:44

Thank you :)

WhatsWrongWithYou · 22/09/2010 13:45

Akhems that's amazing! This is a perfect time for you to find your own style. Lots of people say positive things about the personal shopping services at places like John Lewis and Debenhams. You don't have to spend loads of money., maybe go in prepared to buy one or two outfits for everyday, or an occasion.

Or you could treat yourself to a colour/style consultation (which costs money and I know a lot of Mners poo poo it), which would be a great starting point for the new you!

geordieminx · 22/09/2010 13:49

Akhems - just looked at your profile - you look amazing!!! Well done - you must feel fab!

IsThatTheTime · 22/09/2010 13:54

Akhems that is extraordinary, well done, a time for treating yourself if ever I heard one!

IsThatTheTime · 22/09/2010 13:55

And in answer to the OP, yes, but I'm about to go back to work and can't really go in the 2 pairs of knackered Evans jeans I bought in desperation after DD2, gonna have to bite the bullet and do some fat shopping, boooooo!

Katisha · 22/09/2010 13:57

Strewth have just looked at your profile!

How long did it take to get the weight off?

Incredible!

Easywriter · 22/09/2010 14:00

Wow well done Akhems!
You look amazing.

I had a friend who had the "what's my style problem" in the 90's when we met.

She unfortunately had a twat of a bf who basically had her looking like a sex worker. It was very hard to tactfully point out that we were certain that this wasn't "her" look.

Thankfully she didn't stay in that phase for very long.

akhems · 22/09/2010 14:44

Thanks all of you, that photo was taken in Feb, I've lost about another 20kg since then and it's taken almost three years. I just really don't have a clue how I'm supposed to look these days.. when I look in the mirror I still see my old self so feel ridiculous in nice clothes, like an imposter.
