Knitwear for Autumn/Winter....what will you be wearing?

I have a couple of polo neck jumpers but I end up feeling claustrophobic and am of large norks so they dont do me much justice.

What will you be wearing to keep warm and stylish?

this camel poncho

but I wish it was wool and not acrylic...am still searching...

Maryqueenofchocs · 20/09/2010 22:23

Its on Pg 5 of the H&M link,,,sorry but it won't link direct..

AdasMum · 21/09/2010 11:23

I'm going for loose over sized cardigans. Can wear a lot of my summer tops underneath them (don't button up the cardigan)and if very cold add a nice scarf.

polyhymnia · 21/09/2010 12:03

Watching this thread with interest, as knitear is key to A/W dressing but I have a few issues/ challenges in this area.

First, I'm a strapping Size 22, with bust to match, though (thank heaven),tall with long legs and a waist.

Also:

  • hate polo necks. They don't flatter my shortish neck and they annoy me.
  • hate ponchos - yes, I know they're big news this season, and I'm sure lots of people will look fab in them. But I would look like a ship in full sail.
  • hate waterfall effects on big busts (why do 'plus size' retailers churn them out ??). Ditto assymmetric hemlines - on most people.
  • DH hates ALL cardigans on me (regardless of price/ style), because he thinks they're frumpish/ mumsy on big busts. He's usually v. constructive when commenting on my clothes, so I don't discount his opinion - in fact tend to share it. But cardigans are useful ...

I tend to concentrate on sweaters, preferably longline, with V (or possibly scoop) necks. I like these, and they offer possibilities for layering with nice camis and wearing with statement necklaces. Have got 2 cashmere ones from M and S and ordered one from B*n. Also have found some good knited tunics, which, with jeans/ jeggings, boots, etc will be my basic winter 'uniform'.

But - if you haven't stopped reading by now -I'm still interested in trying cardigan/s. Any ideas from you S and B experts????

polyhymnia · 21/09/2010 12:04

'Knitwear', not 'knitear' of course!

AdasMum · 21/09/2010 12:12

Hi Polyhymnia,
Got quite a few trendy cardigans from TK Maxx. On a good day they seem to have loads in all styles and sizes.
And at least they did not cost you THAT much if DH & you decide to still hate them.

AdasMum · 21/09/2010 12:14

Forgot to mention that the 'non chunky massive ones' can be flattering for bigger busts too. Try a 'non chunky longer loose straight cut version'. Dooes this make sense?

polyhymnia · 21/09/2010 12:15

Mmm, there is a TK Maxx quite near, much loved by my son. Must take a look.

polyhymnia · 21/09/2010 12:17

In answer to your second post, Adasmum, yes, thanks, it does - have you seen anywhere that does these paerticularly well ?

HowsTheSerenity · 21/09/2010 12:23

I have the same problem, I love cardis but they do not flatter me all that much. I would love to wear polo necks but I find they give me a monoboob look.
I pretty much wear the same thing to work: skirt or jeans, shirt, cardi and flats. I need new shirts/t shirts.
Might try the knit dress look though. I think gap has some nice ones.

AdasMum · 21/09/2010 12:38

Polyhymnia...I just hunt up and down the high street almost every weekend with DD (who thankfully is asleep in her buggy by the time we hit the shops Smile). Got one of the cardigans just described at Primark (as everythin there a bargain but don't expect to wear it next season) and can only refer back to TK Maxx, they have an awful lot of knitwear at the moment.

Serenity - I'd love a nice knit dress too, but not too clingy to avoid sausage effect! Please let me know when you come across one!

mellifluouscauliflower · 21/09/2010 12:48

I bought this in a size 18 from White Stuff.

No idea if it is fashionable but it looks good with a thin stripey top under it and a bit of interesting jewellery. It isn't too unkind on my vast expanse of matronly bosom and is made of lovely wool.

I guess if the polos were quite thin you could put this over the top and you would be very toasty.

AdasMum · 21/09/2010 12:50

www.tkmaxx.com/view-all/black-draped-cardigan/invt/09116301/

There are loads.
I am really flying the flag for TK Maxx and cardingans today Blush.
Not very busy at work at the moment ...

missbeehiving · 21/09/2010 12:51

This for home/weekend with skinnies and boots

and this for work with roll up trousers.

AdasMum · 21/09/2010 12:52

but apparently too busy to spell correctly ...cardigans...

polyhymnia · 21/09/2010 12:53

I remember the joy of being able to browse the shops with DS asleep - tho' it was a long time ago. He's 26 today!!

Two knitted 'dresses' I have and like - though I'm going to wear them as tunics - are from M and S Autograph Weekend range. Sorry, I'm rubbish at linking, but they are called:

  • Autograph Weekend Cotton Rich Variegated Stripe Knitted Tunic with Cashmere and
  • Autograph Weekend Cotton Rich Stripe Knitted Dress with Cashmere

In fact, they're the same 'dress', but the first has brown and grey/ black stripes and the second navy and grey. Both with nice detailing - zip pockets, etc.

I don't find them too clingy, but they are light (cotton/ cashmere mix), so really more sutable for now than as winter knitwear.

Also have and like Boden 'Retro Spot Tunic' - a bit warmer, and doesn't seem to cling. It's rather pricy, though I got it at 20% off.

Anyway, there are already good knitted dress threads on S and B.

KristinaM · 21/09/2010 13:00

I have big boobs and i love cardis

IMHO they divide the expanse up into three slimming panels

i NEVER wear polos, turtle or crew necks as i dislike the mono boob look

thsi year i have bought this from Wrap and two cashmere ones from Uniqlo

spiritmum · 21/09/2010 13:01

These people do yummy knitwear and up to a 24, too.

this

I have this in blue

This is next on my list

flattering

nice but not for me

polyhymnia · 21/09/2010 13:06

Thanks for the ideas, spiritmum. I do get Poetry stuff, and have their long cotton sweater this season (teal blue). But am going to explore those you suggest too. Some of them look really good (except for my credit card!).

spiritmum · 21/09/2010 13:17

I know, the credit cards do take a beating, don't they? I'm a 14/16 and my mum is a 24 and we both love Poetry (and my mum is not an old grannie type, just that it transcends age )

AdasMum · 21/09/2010 13:32

I did not know Poetry before - excellent! Thanks spiritmum

moragbellingham · 21/09/2010 13:58

I looked at the H&M poncho this morning thinking I'd be able to just rush in and get a brown/grey one.
It was definitely a bit itchy - shame really.

I quite fancy a cable knit chunky something, not sure what yet. Perhaps a snood.

I have a GAP long cardi - sorry "shawl collar sweater coat"Hmm. Just like one my mum used to wear
The biker jacket one is nice but has a distractingly huge floppy neck.
Didn't see half the others in store.

moragbellingham · 21/09/2010 14:04

this could be nice.

spiritmum · 21/09/2010 14:18

I was watching a vintage camel cape thing on eBay, the same as those I bagged off my mum except the ones I nicked were kindly given were in houndstooth and red. It sold for £98! Shock

collision · 22/09/2010 22:08
