Should I get my 4yr old DD hair cut into a bob?

Opinions please!!! I have a DD who has just started school - at the moment she has lovely long blond hair down to half way down her back, with a few gentle curls and no fringe. It looks beautiful down although perhaps a bit too top heavy for her, but for school they have to tie it back all the time - no issue there, but I am really tempted by the idea of a petit filous bob for her, as she has quite an elfin little face - I wouldn't have it cut if she didn't want to, but I know that she could be persuaded... Aargh - can't decide - what do you think? (wish I could insert photo, so you could get better idea...)

Your post made me laugh. The petit filous bob!

That is exactly the style I've been trying to achieve for my 3 and a half year old DD.

She's just grown out her fringe and this is what it now looks like. I love it (and so does sheHmm)
She has to keep brushing it off her face with her her hands though so wears a headband or clips at nursery. For some reason her hair grows forwards from the back of her head.

DD2 has thicker, heavier hair so hers is better longer with a bit of curl at the bottom.

My DD has this and is 4. She looks lovely and also quite cool for a 4 year old! I wish I had her hair tbh instead of the frizzy mess I have!

Yes, give it a go - you'll never know for sure how it looks unless you try it, and hair will always grow back again if you/she don't like it. You might even find it suits her better than wearing it long.

It will be much easier to wash & dry, handier for school, and with an elfin face (God how I wanted one of those when I was younger) (still do, actually) she'll probably look adorable. So go for it!

My DD has the petit filou bob (love the name!) with a kind of fringe because she refused to wear hair clips etc. So hair had to be shorter for school.

The number of people who comment on it, and how pretty it is (I'm more concerned about the practical!) and that she looks very grown up is amazing.

beautiful, go for it.

My freind's dd has the most fabulous graduated bob - a bit like the peti filou one, but shaped into her necka t the back. It looks absolutly wonderful. Much better than long hair that needs to be looked after so carefully to keep it looking nice.

Hurray! - thank you for such positive comments! You're right - If we don't do it now, I will always wonder what it could have been like and she might lose that potential cuteness as she gets older! Petit Filou here we come (now have to find a decent hairdresser to do it!!! :)

My dd(5) has a graduated bob and its fine. She has poker straight hair though so it never looks messy iyswim.

Not sure if it would look as good on curly/wavy hair.

Pandsbear · 20/09/2010 11:29

Ah she will look lovely! I want to cut my twins' hair too like this but they are insistent that they want it loooong. They had the petit filou bob for a while as their hair grew but now they have their own opinions (they are 5)

dotty2 · 20/09/2010 11:53

DD1 used to have a bob when she was 3 -4 and looked lovely. However, she almost constantly had nits. I think it's the worst possible length for getting infested - long enough to be swinging near other children's hair, too short to tie back. Sorry to rain on your parade with such a boring practical consideration, but she has only had them once in a year since it got long enough to tie back so I am resigned to a boring, utilitarian pony tail for now.

I have 3 girls and all have had little bobs at this age, although DD3 who is 4 has a bob that is a little too long now,and needs trimming.
She likes to wear hair in pigtails but they never stay in more than a few minutes!
I say go for it.

4andnotout · 20/09/2010 12:56

My dd2 has had a jaw length bob since she was 3, she is now 5 and loves to wear alicebands with the big flowers or bows attached. It really suits her and I'm hoping that the hairdresser will be able to do the same to dd3's hair at the next cut as she has straggly hair at the moment and now she is 3 (today) she needs a proper haircut :)

My DD had a long hair half way down her back till the age of 8. She finally persuaded me to let her cut it into a bob. I was reluctant at first but now I love it.

Looking back at the photos of her with long hair I wish I had done it years earlier! LOL

traceybath · 20/09/2010 13:53

Well DD is currently only 14 months but thats the hairstyle she will have.

I actually really dislike uber long hair on little girls.

pinkhousesarebest · 20/09/2010 18:44

My DD has a little sharp bob, and has since she was a baby. She wears a little clip in the side. Sooo easy and always tidy.

ebojones · 20/09/2010 21:03

Ahh the petit filou bob is a personal favourite of mine Smile DD had it when she was around 4 and it looked great. She has very fine blonde hair and it was a good style for her hair type. Alas, she insisted on growing it long and now has hair down her back with a fringe
