nice tweedy type shorts that are meant to go over tights, not some desperately seeking susan type claptrap.

a) pre-pubescent (i.e. young!! -that's what us old giffers call it)

Sadly I would love to be wearing shorts and tights but at (shhhh) 40 I think those days are behind me.

Was shopping with an 18year old the other day and was gutted that she could wear a short pinafore brown tweedy dress with chunky tights and boots. And I couldn't.

awww thanks bottyburp i dont think 40 is too old either, and i think the look can suit all shapes and sizes! you are whispers 40 not 70 !

Could I just pop my head round the corner and ask what shoes does one wear with shorts and tights pumps? I have quite good legs just a shame about the muffin top they are attached to. So have we decided that we can do shorts and tights non?

I don't like shorts and tights on girls at all, because usually the shorts are too short and the tights are always full of holes or runs or are pilled. It just looks tatty. If they'd smarten it up a bit it'd be fine.

Conversely I like the thought of good tailored shorts in everything from tweed to denim, and tights on grown-ups, and can imagine them looking good with anything from brogues to knee boots.

But not on me, alas.

spiritmum yeah the tights need to look decent, ie no holes or pilling.

I do wool/ tweed shorts over tights in winter - with a chunky-ish boot to balance out thighs a bit. Not short short mind you. Not sure whether it looks vile but have not noticed anyone pointing and laughing. Yet.

I love the look but I have awful, awful legs. I have actually dreamt that I tried on shorts and tights and they looked brilliant, then I woke up and was gutted (insert not much going on in my life smiley here)

I do worry about my stomach, I must admit. because I have reasonable legs, certainly slim up to mid-thigh, I worry that I look a bit Weeble-esque around the tum, then with slim legs underneath.

Every time I see anyone in shorts and tights it doesn't look bad in itself, but it just looks so uncomfortable that it doesn't look good. Doesn't the shorts material sort of catch on the tights in a way that a miniskirt doesn't?

(not saying it would be out-and-out uncomfortable, obviously not, just kind of annoying?)

well I am going to go for it this year. I bought some fairly tailored sort of smart shorts of bluey grey for the summer and because I am such a slattern barely wore them because of not having legs shaved enough (yes I am ashamed) so am going to wear them this autumn with black opaques, some funky ish sort of ankle shoe things with mid heel and a cool silk blouse tucked in. It is a complete departure for me but I quite like it. I am 36.

The other thing you need to be careful of is straying a little too far into principal boy territory.
