Why are clothes colours are still so horrible?

I've just had a totally fruitless clothes buying trip to Oxford. Why are so many clothes still (after what feels like 3 years) purple, petrol blue, grey, or that vile mustardy colour? The only one of those that suits me is the purple and even I'm tired of that.

Oh yes, I didn't even mention that tomato soup red that's all over M and S

Brilliant for a Minnie Mouse party Grin

I don't really see what's wrong with Oxford. I was in town today and I saw loads of stuff I'd buy - Zara, River Island, Topshop, Reiss, Oasis, even Miss Selfridge has stuff I'd buy (if I had any money, that is!)

The only big shop that I can think of that's missing from Oxford is H&M, and I often find that the stuff in there looks awful on me, so I'm not really bothered.

Where are all these sludgy colours? Most of the stuff in Zara at the moment is kind of a denim-blue. There's lots of pale pink stuff about at the moment too, which I quite like.

I forgot to mention it, but that too BoF :o

The only "colours" I see are beiges and nothing-pink, the sort of thing that Dulux (did I get that right, always get mixed up with Durex?) would group together under a heading of "Illuminating Neutrals".

nappyaddict · 21/09/2010 01:41

What about this or this or this sort of colour? There's quite a bit of that about at the moment.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/09/2010 01:47

Hmm, well maybe will trawl NewLook. Although that first cardi is nice it does break my model/arse rule (see above). How immature does it make me that I snorted at the last top featuring "rustic faggoting detail"?

nappyaddict · 21/09/2010 01:58

The one about not buying anything that makes the model look chunky? That cardigan didn't have a model pictured did it?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/09/2010 02:17

no but it managed to make the invisible mannequin's bum stick out. Might sounds paranoid but I know thhat if the tiddly pretend plastic bums are protruding, it's going to look like it's been vacuum packed onto me Shock

Lauriefairycake · 21/09/2010 08:32

Monsoon has some lovely green stuff

And I'm obsessed with navy - much more flattering on me than black.

alemci · 21/09/2010 08:37

i didn't particularly like the colours either, very dreary. i had a Debenhams 20% voucher and still couldn't find anything i liked.

i look washed out in neutrals and better in clear bright colours.

not sure about some of the fashions either. some of the tops are so long and you can end up with a jacket potato look. (big on top with skinny legs).

also everything is acrylic and expensive with it.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 21/09/2010 11:54

Ha! jacket potato look. That's it. Or like a hot water bottle on legs. Most people look awful in giant chunky knit things that swamp their upper half, before diving in tight just under the hip/arse area.

Going back to the 1950s styles (got a sudden obsession):

yes

noooo

nappyaddict · 21/09/2010 12:13

Ah see I think bums should be protruding. I thought it made the model's bum look nice and round and pert.
