Anyone dyed their dark brown hair to blonde?

I'm 44, going grey, but naturally have very dark brown hair which I've been dyeing (dark/medium brown) to cover the grey.

I saw a hideous photograph of myself at a friend's wedding recently and realised that I'm possibly too old/wrinkly/haggard to carry off dark brown much longer and have been wondering about going blonde-ish or light brown - the same sort of colour as Jennifer Aniston (although I do understand that I won't come out with her face or body!).

I have dark brown eyebrows, and brown eyes and my hair is still long.

Has anyone done this? Did it come out ok? Did you do it in a salon or at home?

Or perhaps changing my hair colour isn't going to make any difference at all and I should just accept that that woman in the photo is here to stay...

Thank you for any advice you might have.

salon

highlights

otherwise you will look mad

And by 'you', I mean 'I'. Honestly, I speak from experience. It is VERY hard to go blonde using a home dye kit. But you can get a fab, natural look from a salon.

You need to go to a salon to get this done or else your hair is going to turn a wierd unexpected colour.

The type of home dye you have been using can affect the result you can get ...some are easier than others to "strip".

An idea is to get some highlights put in , just a few can be very flattering and can avoid the over processed look that many "blondes" eventually get.

I think with your dark eyebrows blonde might be too harsh , a lighter shade of brown would be a better compliment to your eyes .
A good hairdresser will know what colours "go" with your skin tone.

I think dark eyes and brows will be ok with a sort of honey/dark blonde. I don't think you're after a Marilyn Monroe look! More of a warm, golden colour?

droves quite right about the chances of turning your hair an unexpected shade - and a salon, as well as knowing exactly how much of which colour to use so you don't end up with pink and orange streaks, will have specialist colourists who will tell you if you're aiming for too light a shade.

It's expensive but definitely worth it imo. I've got gradually blonder as I've got older - it's more expensive but a bad dye job can really age you at 40, in a way that it doesn't when you're 25. I would never go back to home colouring now.

It is near impossible to go lighter with a home kit unless you want to go full on peroxcide blond... which Im guessing you dont!

I agree with th others, you should go to a salon. They'll probably strip the brown out of your hair and then add highlights and low lights. Explain to them if you dont want a lot of upkeep and they may leave some silver tones in so that roots are less obvious.

If money is a n issue then call around your town and see if anywhere is doing model nights for students, I had a full hea dof highlights & a cut and blow dry at a really expensive salon for £40 a couple of months ago.

Yes, I go dark brown to blonde all the time.
Only at a salon with highlights and sometimes a tint underneath.
