will dry cleaning get rid of this manmade pong?

Febreze?

it's a swing type dress, champagne underskirts made of prob nylon, with a black lacey ( acetate) overlay.

Seller has been cool, and said i can send it back and that she swears it come from a non smoking household. I have an important do to go to on sat, so is there any way i can get rid of this. Or should i be looking for something else, and send it back.

I can't really afford anything else but i don't want to smell lol.

Why not try Febreeze? I am always amazed at how well it works. Is it 50s style, or actual 50s? If is actual 50s, then the smell might be quite erm, ingrained!

Good luck, dress sounds lovely.

hi its 50's style, tesco lol. i am being a bit daring wearing it, as i am size 14/16 and normally live in jeans.

does febreze have it's on smell, will i be walking round smelling like a bottle of Domestos?

I have handwashed dry clean only clothes without any problems, using cool water. Or you could burn an incense stick or good candle near the dress (obviously without burning the dress.) I have used these methods for getting rid of smells from clothes bought from charity shops. What kind of pong is it?

It came in one of those grey plastic post bags. Smelt of ciggies, really really strong. I Got intouch like i said with the seller, and she was really honest as far as i could tell!! Said she'd no idea, but would be happy to refund me.

I googled smoky garment and i did actually find a post where someone one a forum had replied to soemthing similar. That poster said ' oh your item didn't come in one of those grey bags did it as it sometimes makes things smell awful?'

The smokey smell is weird, its like smokey combined with a plastic smell. The overlay is heavy lace, but it's (according to label) manmade acetate.

If i bung it in a cool bath with washing gel, maybe that would work. Be a bugger to dry tho, and i won't be able to wring it.

Is there anywhere you can hang it outside? (Obv not inthe rain...) I have found this has got rid of smoke smells before....

piratecat · 14/09/2010 15:09

not not really, anywhere covered, thanks tho.

i am wondering now if the lining is acetate (if you google you get silk like materials showing) and the outer lace is polyester.

Those mailbags stink of smoke all the time, its only the grey ones strangely enough. the pink ones are fine as are white!

piratecat · 14/09/2010 19:44

isn't it weird?

I read somewhere (in an old, old book) that placing a saucer of water next to a smelly garment could take the smell away.

I always disbelieved this and have never tried it, but if all else and Febreeze fails, it could be worth a go.

Report back and tell all if it works (or not) and good luck

piratecat · 15/09/2010 16:33

bit the bullet and got some Febreze, seems to have done the job!!
