House Coat

I fancy one! My Nan used to wear an old blue nylon one, but I wondered if anyone out there knew where I could get one, maybe a retro type.
Wierd idea, but I hate it when I have nice clothes on then have to cook dinner or do a touch of house work (only a touch!).
It would seem loke a practical solution to have a house coat hung up somewhere that I could sling on.

How are you with a sewing machine?

topsi · 12/09/2010 14:53

OOOO secret I have found a friend! Would quilted not be a bit warm though?
Maybe house coat is not quite the right description as most of them seem like dressing gowns.

Ha! Just been on holiday to France with stepmum; she was on a mission to replace her mum's old housecoat which she'd been wearing since 1970 (!) - a gorgeous confection of pink and blue nylon. I've never seen them on sale in the UK, but walking round the local market in France we couldn't move for the damned things - all shapes, sizes and patterns - clearly a French thing. She found something very fetching, in blue floral polyester, and she's very happy. I'll let her know she's clearly still on trend.

Oh Fermina it has a pocket for my feather duster, you are spoiling me.

I need to go shopping in France for one?? At least someone out there knows how to dress well.

See I just had an urge to dust the TV cabinet but really don't want to muck up my new Boden tunic and Isabella Oliver leggins so I resisted and sat down at my laptop again. This will never do!

this claims to be a top/dress but could be quite good for flinging on for housework. Alternatively, maybe you could use an old shirt of DH's?

Amazing thread...it's like the opposite of the school-run dress.

How messy do you get when you clean?

Either do your 'dirty jobs' whilst in pj's or just be careful. Clean your bathroom when naked just before you shower or have a bath and no loo cleaner on your clothes at all - problem solved.

Really - just think - you'll become so used to your housecoat you'll forget to take it off and whats the point of nice clothes under it then?

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 12/09/2010 15:19

Seriously, if you want a housecoat that's stylish your either going to have to buy vintage (as tethersend suggested), go to France or make your own / have them made to a vintage pattern.

I've settled for man sized aprons and rolling my sleeves up. on me they wrap around so far that they join at the back and come down to mid-calf length. It's not a perfect solution but good enough for me.

FerminaUrbinoDaza · 12/09/2010 15:20

yy I clean the bathroom naked, 'tis the only way.

I saw them for sale in a shop called Boyes in Scarborough. A lab coat or chef's jacket could work too.

DonaAna · 27/08/2012 18:14

I wear Marni housecoats - an ironic take on the old theme.

old thread alert

FanOfSlippers · 27/08/2012 18:18

Bit of a bizarre thread to be resurrected after so long, no?

auldspinster · 27/08/2012 19:50

I was searching for a thread on 'touch of cloth' on sky 1 and stumbled across this one.
