Everyday tops that aren't t-shirts

sorry for starting ANOTHER thread.

is there a daily limit?

I'm gradually de-frumping my wardrobe. It's coming along quite nicely with a range of just-above-the-knee skirts to be worn with my mumsnet-uniform-fly-boots or chunky wedge shoes.

But what do I wear on top?
buttoned shirts rarely fit (32H)
I have a wardrobe full of dull t-shirts.

thanks.

bumping this as also find this tricky

muddleduck · 09/09/2010 16:36

thanks.

I'm wearing much nicer tshirts these days.
but these are still really dull.

still at least I can get some variety by covering them up with dull cardis.

I usually end up with what are effectively t shirts but with long sleeves in this sort of weather (big norks here too so blouses tricky).

It's too cold to wear "tops" with no sleeves, of course there are always jumpers.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly who can shed some light ....

Me too - I used to have lots of long sleeved fine knit tops in plain colours with just a bit of detail on the neck - mostly M&S but this year everything is over decorated, with frills, strange necklines etc. The Boden uptown top is nice, but the colour range is limited and it seems to have sold out for the time being in smaller sizes anyway.
Has anyone seen anything suitable?

nikkershaw · 09/09/2010 16:48

i like plain v neck t shirts with nice cardigans Grin. or v neck jumpers

Celery · 09/09/2010 16:52

I think the key is accessorizing. Not that I do it much. But I often see a woman who looks nice, and then I realise that she is just wearing a normal t shirt type top, but it is more about how she's put her whole outfit together, with accessories, and good hair and make up.

seeker · 09/09/2010 16:55

Good bra is important with plain t shirt tops too.

MissWooWoo · 09/09/2010 16:55

ah yes, let's not forget about layering too

pebblejones · 09/09/2010 16:59

What Celery said... Accessorise with nice chunky necklace or scarf, makes all the difference!

nancydrewrocked · 09/09/2010 17:27

Layering so vests/camisoles with fine knit tight cardi/long loose cotton cardi with chunky knit big cardi over top.

Personally I find it easier to wear plain bottoms (boyf jeans/jeggings) with dressier top which then still looks very casual. As per other thread I am wearing this today: link
with a longline casual card and cotton scarf.

MissWooWoo · 09/09/2010 17:35

lovely top nancydrewrocked

Rhian82 · 09/09/2010 17:37

I wear a lot of strappy tops with a nice cardie over.

minipie · 09/09/2010 17:44

Muddleduck, have you seen that Bravissimo do a (smallish) range of clothes specifically for larger norks? Might be worth a look for shirts etc.

iwilldothis · 09/09/2010 19:18

I'm liking these for a change.
M&S do a similar thing, more expensive, without the pocket, and longer, that I think would look good with a waist belt....would link, but I can't find it now...

iwilldothis · 09/09/2010 19:19

oh, and change the look of t-shirts with a nice scarf :)

muddleduck · 13/09/2010 09:42

Thanks for these ideas.

Bravissimo clothes are (IMO) a pile of crap. I've bought several things from there and they are poorly designed, poorly cut and wash badly. About once a year I decide to give them another try in the hope that thigs have improved, but no luch so far.

how do I wear a scarf these days?

I'm still looking, for some close fitting tops with a little detail at neck that I can tuck in. Most of what is on offer this year is smock shaped, which makes me look shorter and chunkier than I am, or very decorated, which means I can't wear a patterned cardigan with it. Am toying with the idea of the Johnnie B. sheerish long sleeved top and getting one of the cropped cardigans to go over on the days I don't wear a vintage patterned one. I've lost 3 stone this year and I want to show off my waist!
