Animal Print, frumpy on brunettes? or too tarty on blondes? wdyt?

My blonde friend mentioned a while ago that she couldn't wear animal print because she was blonde and it would be 'too much' a nod too far towards bet lynch, but that it would suit me. I thought, mmm, know what you mean, mgiht be a bit cliched on a blonde.

Then lisa armstrong (times magazine) wrote that animal prints are gorgeous unless you ahve brown hair, then they're too frumpy.

and then i felt Confused

Any comments on this extremely important issue?

I'm "autumn" colouring and my colour lady told me that animal print (mainly brown based not black) is good for us. I have brown hair and green eyes. So I wear a smattering of it, layered vest, chiffon blouse, etc.

i bought a fab zara animal print shirt in spring - had medium length highlighted hair. it looked ace.

i then had all my hair cropped, and all over blonde. love my new hair but haven't been able to wear shirt since - looks terrible.

incidentally, the only other animal print item i've ever owned was my wedding dress (ash blonde at time Grin)

That animal print dress is lovely on Asos model.

ElefunTess, I think animal print would look ridiculous on somebody of 21. I think you have to be a woman, as in not a girly. dykwim? I think it would look silly on a young girl, like she was trying to dress like her boss, or that she was slavishly obeying something she'd read in a fashion magazine 'wear this during October'.

I think animal print is always a bit complicated.

At the beginning of term, DD's new teacher was wearing a leopard-print coat over white jeans with high-heeled orange wedge shoes. She is very tanned, too. It was slightly disconcerting!

bunnymother · 09/09/2010 09:14

It's like the little girl w the curl: when it's good, it's very good. And when it's bad, it's horrid.

nancydrewrocked · 09/09/2010 09:17

It is not a matter of hair colour.

It is however a size and age issue. Animal print rarely looks good on anyone over 25 and really only looks good on the under 25's when they are super slim.

Fine line between cutting edge fashion and glamour model

monkeysmama · 09/09/2010 09:35

That outfit sounds interesting Bonsoir Hmm.

I am a massive animal print fan.

I have brown hair but have worn it when I had white blonde hair, dark blonde hair, dark red hair.

I have a silk snakeprint mini dress from Zara which is one of the most flattering items I've ever owned. I often wear my grey silk animal print shirt with jeans and am sure it looks chic rather than brass.

Animal print scarves are great - M&S did a red and blue one last year and I have a River Island grey and pink one which get lovely compliments whenever I wear them.

tyaca · 09/09/2010 11:32

comfy and chic tethersend Grin

ebojones · 09/09/2010 14:38

I am naturally brown haired and have a few caramel highlights running through it. I think the brown sort of leopard print suits my hair colour. However, I stick so shoes, scarves and belts... There are all sorts of alleged style rules that contradict eachother so I would go with what you feeld confortable with.

HalfTermHero · 09/09/2010 15:02

I am brunette and look really rather good in animal print. Got well eyed up by someone's husband whilst wearing said print in a Sainsbury's store last weekend.

GeorginaWorsley · 09/09/2010 19:23

I love a bit of Animal print too.
Am brunette.
I am looking for an animal print bag, ballet pumps and maybe an additional scarf to go with the one I wore last year.
Will not wear all at once, natchWink

Greensleeves · 09/09/2010 19:25

I think animal print is very democratic

it looks fucking awful on everyone

traceybath · 09/09/2010 19:32

Adds animal print to list of things not allowed on mn.

Nice tunic and bootcut jeans for me Wink

tethersend · 09/09/2010 22:38

Grin at tracey

chocolatefroggie · 09/09/2010 22:52

I would agree with greensleeves but I just bought these to wear with skinny jeans and a black tunic top -very audrey hepburn, I hope Hmm

monkeysmama · 09/09/2010 23:33

Tracey you joke but there is a big difference between animal print and a jaunty Boden print dress or mac. Hotchpotch dresses look chic. Animal print looks different. As Johnny Boden said himself, there isn't much more vulgar than middle aged mums looking sexual. Animal print crosses that line in a bad way.

tethersend · 09/09/2010 23:36

"As Johnny Boden said himself, there isn't much more vulgar than middle aged mums looking sexual"

Shock

And what the shitting crikey is a Hotchpotch dress?

bunnymother · 10/09/2010 08:48

"there isn't much more vulgar than middle aged mums looking sexual" - what a sad man Johnny is. Haven't bought anything from Boden apart from wool cardi for baby DD, but they are now on my blacklist.

monkeysmama · 10/09/2010 08:58

I was joking! He did say that. Have a look at the Boden catalogue. They're all called things like Hotchpotch and described as "snazzy".

monkeysmama · 10/09/2010 09:00

I was joking! It drives me mad. He did say that. Have a look at the Boden catalogue. They're all called things like Hotchpotch and described as "snazzy".

tethersend · 10/09/2010 09:02

Did he say that? Really?

What a cunt.

Really
Honestly
It is bogging
On EVERYONE
there are perhaps two women per million who can get away with it
The chances of any of us being in that group are very slim
I say AVOID and wear something else entirely.

bunnymother · 10/09/2010 10:07

MM - I was v confused by your post, and even wondered if your account had been hacked! Grin

johnny Boden needs therapy if that's what he thinks. And I want nothing to do with a company that has that sad view. Hopscotch or whatever dress? Never.
