Do you think "no harm in it" or do you also say "why?????"

GypsyMoth · 07/09/2010 12:58

Mama2b5 · 07/09/2010 12:59

I'm with you Mama2b5! One DS here.

dottyaboutstripes · 07/09/2010 13:03

WHY???

I have 3 boys. I'll add that we don't like dogs either, though it seems baby/toddler boys are meant to wear clothing with pictures of dogs on. They are everywhere.

Mama2b5 · 07/09/2010 13:04

dragon - me also - 3 boys and depending on the ages its really hard, not impossible but sometimes from a far i see a top and like the colours then as i walk closer i see the ugly skull looking back at me!!!!!!!! also for my baby boy the bibs, socks& tops have "little monster logo" on it and i think why!!!!!

OP posts:
rosieposey · 07/09/2010 13:04

Agreed, nothing but negative labelling. I refuse to put ds who is a gorgeous toddler in a y of that rubbish :(

Mama2b5 · 07/09/2010 13:06

yess i agree dottyaboutstripes - i also dont like cheeky monkey!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks seaturtle im glad im not alone!!!!

my boys are a bit older now (8 and 13) but still the message on clothes doesn't change.
tbh i don;t have a problem with skull and cross bones for my 8 yr old, but i do hate the skater boy and tantrum style tops. someobody brought my 8yr old a t-shirt that said warning contents may offend!
the scandinavian brands offer much nicer styling with stars and stripes etc rather than the uk slogans and computer game/football imagery.
I find it just as hard to shop for the boys to find suitable clothing that i am happy for them to wear as i do to find clothing thats not too grown up for my 4 and 1 yr old girls.
luckily ds1 is into skate/bmx wear now and while its heavily logo'd with brands such as dc and hurley at least its not offensive.

Mama2b5 · 07/09/2010 13:10

agreed rosieposey - why not wonderful fun positive logo's
my 3 boys are great not little monsters, cheeky monkeys or walking around with a symbol of death! if you saw a cartoon and had a bottle they would have the skull & crossbones to show death, danger so why oh why put it on Children's clothing!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 07/09/2010 13:14

I hate them.

DS1 hates any logo or picture on t-shirts so now I tend to buy a batch of plain white t-shirts and dye them myself.

Boys clothes in general can be so dull and such sludgy colours.

theyoungvisiter · 07/09/2010 13:18

I hate it. I think it's just as damaging to boys' self-image as the premature sexualisation of little girls.

It is forcing them into the mould of misbehaving, aggressive little tykes whether the cap fits or not.

Boys are already so demonised and stereotyped in society, and the whole "little monster" hard-man image is feeding into that right from day one.

Also, as a not-so-important aside, why the hell are there 45 racks of girls clothes in every shop, and half a measly row of sludge-brown stuff for boys? Do parents only buy clothes for their daughters?

Mama2b5 · 07/09/2010 13:19

My boys ages are 11, 5 and 7 months so yes do find logos on t'shirt, jumpers etc, bibs and socks a bit too much!

OP posts:
dottyaboutstripes · 07/09/2010 13:23

I had 3 girls before I had my 3 boys and the choice was immense for them. It does drive me insane that it's so much more difficult to find nice stuff for my boys (they are 6, 3 and 1)

Mama2b5 · 07/09/2010 13:24

i see a business idea blooming! take the negative and make a positive!!!!
as a mum to 2 girls ages 16 and 9 im fed up also of skinny jeans and low cut tops!!!!!!!!!!! i end up buying tops to put under tops sometimes because they think all 16 year old may not have ermmm boobs my daughter is not allowed to shop by herself in fear of awful low cut tops appearing in her closet!

OP posts:
Mama2b5 · 07/09/2010 13:29

i agree so much with you theyoungvisiter i also hate the sludge-brown, army wear clothes!!!!!!!!!
good idea ""Doyouthinktheysaurus" may have to do that!

I put ds (7m) in a new pair of hand-me-down jeans the other day and had to take them off immediately to snip off the patch on the back that read (wait for it)

'Born Naughty'

grr

nice jeans though

MrsJamin · 07/09/2010 14:16

yuck, I hate it too, have 2 DSs. I won't buy anything with any stereotyping on, I don't even like the ones about 'daddy' - I just use them for PJ tops (sorry, mum). Some shops are worse than others. Tesco is pretty evil for this.

ebojones · 07/09/2010 16:07

I search high and low to get my DS (7) clothes without such logos Sad

Tippychoocks · 07/09/2010 16:12

Won't buy it and like Mrs Jamin, I use anything with Disney or logos or writing on for jammies.
What is the point in declaring anything on your children's fronts, let alone calling them names? Oddness. Who do they think wants to know?
I also hate the high frequency of finding "love" or similar embroidered up the calf or on the bum of otherwise normal jeans or cargo pants for 4year olds. They can't even read it FFS.

realitychick · 07/09/2010 16:33

Loathe it. Though the worst ones are the 'Gameboy addict' ones. May as well have Born Loser tattooed on them. Who designs this muck?

One of my sons was allowed to choose his own PJs once (I promised) and came back with Bart Simpson "Underachiever emblazoned all over them. I won't let him wear them to sleepovers. I agree they are as vile and insidious as the pink Barbie stuff that little girls are fed. Oh, you pressed my rant button, Mama2b5!

UnrequitedSkink · 07/09/2010 16:51

Fed up fed up fed up with all of the above and a lack of reasonably priced alternatives!

It's so depressing when you see the range of clothing that designers come up with for little girls - I'd gladly spend as much on my DSs as I would on a theoretical daughter, if only the choice was out there.

colditz · 07/09/2010 16:57

M and Co are awful for this. All the boy's stuff is littlered with "Careful - I'm feeling Stabby!!!!!!!!!!" and "Class of little shitbags 2003!!!!!!!!!!" and "Borstal is a private school, right?????????" and "I'm a bad tempered, spiteful little bastard and even my parents don't like me!!!!!!!"

Well, not quite, but you get my point.

!!!!!!!!!!!!

GypsyMoth · 07/09/2010 16:57

i dont want ANYTHING with football on it either following our disgraceful efforts at the world cup!!

but thats just me!

would like to see other sports promoted

UnrequitedSkink · 07/09/2010 17:12

PS - Monsoon do some (not a huge amount) nice boys' stuff but 20 squid for a t-shirt? Shock

nicolamumof3 · 07/09/2010 17:24

i must admit that i don't mind the odd skull here and there, but i really hate these slogan tops

3 boys here too, i favour boden, joules, JL, white co. monsoon and seen that lands end now doing some nice bits for my younger two (3y and 4.9yr)

for my older he's more the skinny jeans, fred perry dresser (11yr)
