Parents of girls ....

Us parents of boys tend to be lumbered with dull colours like navy, grey, brown, khaki, stone, mustard etc. Would you find those colours too dull as well or would they be a welcome change from pink and purple?

My two dd's have a lot of brown clothes. Such as these trousers that I got in brown and the green, but she hardly ever wears the green ones. They are quite hard to get sometimes but they suit them so I do try. Neither of them really are pink and purple kind of girls. Their favourite colours are black for one and orange for the other.

My boy doesn't wear much sludge.

He wears navy blue, baby blue, bright red, lots of orange, white, green, purple. He also has a couple of pink things, and lots of stripes and floral patterns.

I try and avoid the whole brown khaki sludge thing for my DS. Definitely no camoflauge clothing. DS is 7 and tends to wear twisted denims or baggy navy cords. Lots of T-shirt tops in Jade green, navy, bright blue, red. Shirts in navy check and blue stripes etc.. I have just bought him a lovely navy duffle coat for winter from JL.
DD is soon to be 6. She loves pink and purple and I like to allow her some freedom in what she wears. There is no way she would wear brown / green etc... However, she does wear boden slim fit denims and other motif tops from there that are not pink.

My daughter wouldn't be happy to wear sludge, though she doesn't like pink either. She likes green and blue. There isn't enough decent green around at the moment. Purple's OK with her, as is red.

DD (7) chooses to wear khaki a lot of the time (though she also likes blues and purple). DS (12) has recently started choosing and buying his own clothes, and is a riot of red, yellow, orange, green and purple t-shirts and hoodies - there's rather more choice now he has free run at Top Man rather than being stuck with the blue and khaki boys' ranges, though it does seem rather ironic that DD now ignores the racks of girls' clothes and heads for the sludge....

PlumSykes · 07/09/2010 10:30

I never buy pink/purple for my DD. She wears a LOT of navy, as well as orangey-red, brown, mustard yellow, grey and bright green.

My DS is usually in shades of grey and navy with accents of red or yellow, perhaps, but I don't find it dull at all.

nancydrewrocked · 07/09/2010 10:45

DD (5) wears almost entirely pink, purple and jade green. Partly because these are her favourite colours and partly because I have stopped buying other colours to try and reduce some of the truely horrendous wardrobe combinations she came out with when left to her own devices!

DS1 (4) is very particular about what he wears so I cannot buy anything for him unless he has approved it! Mostly he goes for jeans, combat shorts and dark t-shirt although I do try and steer him towards brighter colours.

FiveOrangePips · 07/09/2010 12:39

DD red and black (channelling Denis the Menace) and anything with animals, she does not like pink or flowers, which makes it hard sometimes to find clothes for her.

DS likes bright colours, yellow, red, green etc, he likes looking smart too, shirts, bow tie (I know!) and braces, I don't have a problem buying colourful clothes for him - H&M always good.

cazzybabs · 07/09/2010 12:41

As someone with 4 girls... I would love boys clothes away from the stereotypical girls colours. I do love bright clothes though....love toby tiger..but also duller clothes (e.g. white company)

larakitten · 07/09/2010 13:15

I get so fed up of pink and pastelly clothes for my DD (3). I would love to get blacks, browns, khakis etc for her....the older girls range at Next does have some more interesting colours but the age 3 is so massive on my tiny girl that all I can do is lust after them.........Envy

iwilldothis · 07/09/2010 13:56

DD 18months pretty much lives in pink. Wanted to buy her a blue, yellow & white dress but thought better of it when I realsied her shoes, socks, tights, hairbands etc. wouldn't match. Pink shoes would have just ruined the look of that dress and I wasn't prepared to buy her a new pair of shoes just to match one dress. So it's boring, but easier to stick to pink.

bethjeff · 07/09/2010 15:56

My dd wears a lot of mint green and gold. Or green and purple.

Can't bear the twee pink clothes.

A lot of GAP childrenswear or H&M is quite inoffensive if you're stuck.

ebojones · 07/09/2010 16:05

iwilldothis... girls shoes are so annoying - last winter, I took DD to Clarks for boots and they brought out 3-4 pairs - all pink or purple. They really ruin outfits that are not pink or purple. In the end got her some grey leather boots from Next.

iwilldothis · 08/09/2010 14:09

ebojnes I'm just back from town getting DD her a new pair of shoes (too cold & wet for sandals now!) and I got her a minky browny pinky greyish colour... so not bright pink and def not purple, think it will tone in with most things for autumn/winter.... dunno what age your DD is, maybe she's too old for them, my DD is only 18months, but they're Clarks in case you're interested? THey also have some nice brown boots...

Bonsoir · 08/09/2010 17:37

My DD wears almost every colour - though not much brown/beige. She has to wear navy/grey/white for school, and grey really suits her and I find it mixes and matches well with pink/purple and other colours, so she wears a lot more grey than navy (which is a bit draining on her).
