Godson's Christening - please help me find a dress.

I'm size 14, DD / E cup, pear shaped (middle prob size 12, but need a 14 to go over my hips and bum).

Hmm, what else? Dark shoulder length hair, pale skin. Early 30's, but boring not very adventurous with clothes.

I normally wear black, but assume not really suitable for this. I think I look good in "strong" colours - black, teal, navy, whatever that bright blue colour is called, red etc. I think I'm too pale for white / cream, but suspect not really suited to godparent anyway, right?

Please him me find something - ideally under £100, but can go to £150 if something I could often wear again. Happy to buy shoes too if needs be, but again limited by budget - would prefer in the region of £50-ish, and not too high, as I might need to hip-carry ds a bit during the day. Well, that's my excuse for not too high heels anyway, really it's just because I topple over...

Hi, I wore this dress to my daughter's christening and I have never had so many compliments. I have had my colours done, and you sound quite similar, and therefore went for the silver/raspberry combination. It works with black shoes (just), but would look great with some silver heels which I wore with mine (but it was a warm day). Great value too. HTH.

Yay, an answer, thanks! Lovely dress blossoming. I like that website too - will have a look around. I have actually thought of getting my colours done (unrelated to this event, obviously), as dh keeps complaining about me only ever buying black!

My original rough idea was something a little more formal that I could wear with a jacket (Christening end Sep, so strong potential for arctic cool weather), but will have a look if I can get something to cover. I love wrap dresses.

This sounds like it would look lovely on you

This could also look lovely

as could this

The second two would probably need a cardigan/jacket maybe a grey one like this as would go with anything

Shoes - maybe something like this?

or maybe this

HTH

That dress was very chapel appropriate. It wrapped quite high up and there was no cleavage on show. Also it hit me at the knee. I love it. Phase Eight might be another formal option for cool weather? Going for separates might be more pricey, maybe M&S Autograph?

mrsstathamiwish · 05/09/2010 19:31

Is black really unsuitable for a christening? especially when you are going to be one of the godparents?

I was hoping not as I have my goddaughters christening next sunday and being four months pregnant with twins am struggling to find something to wear!

MisSalLaneous · 05/09/2010 19:33

Not too keen on dresses 2 and 3, but love the first dress, MentalFloss. What I like about that one and also blossoming's one, is that I can see me wearing it to work etc too, so not a once-off only (not that that's the requirement, but trying to pre-argue the case of buying more than one with myself Wink ).

Shoes - thing is, I need comfortable shoes, I've bought so many cheaper shoes that I've worn once, kept for a year out of guilt, then threw away that I'm nervous about buying too cheap. I suspect just my fussiness and funny feet!

Oh, other thing I forgot - have horrible bingo wings, so can't go sleeveless. But for chapel and weather I probably would need to wear a cover anyway if sleeveless, not not major.

Oh, blossoming, good point re cleavage. Whilst I'm not complaining re cleavage most of the time, it's easy to forget about the view from all sides! I've got certain bras that I now ban to weekends after I once got to work with a wrap dress and realised it looked like I've had some, uhm, work over the weekend!

Oh no mrsstathamiwish, it's probably fine - I have:
a) no clue anyway, and
b) am a bit oversensitive about dh's comments. I know he's joking (most of the time!), but I've realised that I have various designs of the same colour (yup, black) in most things, even shoes...

Phase Eight and Autograph, will have a look now, thanks blossoming.

I liked this one with lace but hate the back zip. Probably not ideal for shame anyway, mind you.

Ok, I need to ask as I love this Suvari dress - too much for daytime?

Can't open that Coast link but just thought I'd add I wore black to both my other kids' christening. I think it's appropriate for church.
Also, getting my colours done was the best thing ever and a great morning spent just on me!! Do it!

MisSalLaneous · 05/09/2010 22:00

Oh cool, thanks blossoming. Well, I'll continue the search for the perfect "coloured" dress, but at least I will have existing clothes to fall back on.

I love the suggestions on here already, as I seriously need nice work clothes anyway for more "casual" days (i.e. not suits, but still need to look presentable).

Where did you do your colouring - that place you linked to earlier, or another company? I am in serious need of a wardrobe overall. I threw out loads of clothes I never wear the other day, with no replacements just yet.

I think I'm more nervous about wearing the appropriate dress as it's obviously someone else's special day. I wore a black dress with white beading on to ds's christening too.

I went to House of Colour (see website for consultants near you). It was £95.00 for a few hours, grading colours within your season to see which suit you best. She also did my make up which I thought I knew everything there was to know! You go in without any make up at all and they cover your clothes and your hair so you see the dramatic difference the right colour has on the way you look.

MisSalLaneous · 06/09/2010 10:11

Thanks, that sounds good, I'll have a look.
