Hi all,

Am currently engaged in what seems to be my perpetual hunt for THE winter coat. I have always struggled, but have found 3 I quite like, and need some help choosing!

Here they are:

  1. Navy

  2. Camel

  3. Purple

I like quite classic styles, but being only 29 I am trying to stay looking a little fashionable. I am a size 14-16 (probably more a 16 in the boob area due to breast feeding) and need something practical but want to look nice at the same time! I have a 3 wk old and 2 dogs so am presuming it will get dirty at some point as well. Style wise I mainly wear dresses with thick tights/boots, smartish jeans, ballet pumps etc so I guess pretty traditional. Ideally I want something that will go with pretty much everything and make me look classy/like I've made a little effort without looking fussy!

Max budget is £100 really (though it would have to be great to justify that really with new baby etc) although I know that isn't really a lot for a good winter coat.

What do you think? TIA.

I wouldn't go for the double breatsed style. They tend to make a large chest look much larger. SO that would rule out 1 and 2.

I think coat 3 is nice and would be more flattering especially with the collar down in more of a v neck.

melpomene · 05/09/2010 15:12

Agree that purple one is nicest.

prettywhiteguitar · 05/09/2010 16:26

I think the purple one would be practical and good for a bigger bust too

Plus its gorgeous !!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 05/09/2010 16:31

I agree - definitely avoid double breasted styles if your boobs are big. Must go and try the purple or grey one myself as I like it best also!

sharbie · 05/09/2010 16:35

your shape sounds like mine op - i never do my coat up tho and i like no 2.what do these styles look like with the buttons undone?

netbook · 05/09/2010 17:04

I'm quite liking this atm, I'm kind of wondering if it's horrible rather than quirky though

Maryqueenofchocs · 05/09/2010 17:17

MrsC2010, I am large chested and have a double breasted winter coat which looks fantastic - even if I say so myself, so don't be put off!

I love 1 or 2, not 3 - too flouncy and will date v v quickly. No 1 is very classic and will go on for years, no 2 has more of an on trend feel with the flare...

So I would prob go with no 2 with some tan heeled lace up boots.Grin

Argh decisions decisions! I have yet to try them on in the flesh so to speak, I'm going to try the Next ones on Wed but might order the Great Plains one as well to try. The navy one has the most instinctive appeal to me because it is navy (big fan!) and quite simple in style with a great collar...the camel one I like because it is a little swishy and the camel would be quite trendy...the purple one just cause the colour is lovely and rich!

I do have a sneaky suspicion that I would love the navy for longest, but I would need to look quite closely at the double breasted thing. And the price tag! But it is only £20 more than the Next one I guess. Not sure how warm moleskin would be as well. You see this is my problem with coats! I overthink/complicate the buying decision and end up missing out or not getting one at all. Or convincing myself that the cheap version of the one I love is the one to go for...after which I discover it actually doesn't fit brilliantly or falls apart.

I have a navy military style coat which I adore and goes with everything...out of the three, I love the whitby best tbh...

WhatsWrongWithYou · 05/09/2010 18:01

Don't know if black is your colour but this one is made for an hourglass figure.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 05/09/2010 18:10

Actually, looking again, the double breasted ones are quite shapely - the rows of buttons are quite close together so they wouldn't have such a widening effect.

The navy one is a bit more 'sensible' looking, and is more of an empire line, which might not flatter you as well as the camel, which looks like it would skim your true waist. The purple one might swamp you and the ruffle, while looking nice, be a bit annoying.

But you won't know any of this for sure until you see them on you.Smile

Yes, you're right. Quite looking forward to having a browse, first shopping trip with the little one so it could be a disaster!!

Just spotted this one...thoughts?

I'm in the same boat...and considering this

MrsC2010 · 06/09/2010 10:01

Arse, now I want this...but waaaay over budget! Grin Sad

I like the purple one from Next.
I had a camel coat a couple of years ago - lovely colour that goes with a lot of stuff in your wardrobe but it can be a high maintenance colour as shows marks / dirt more than darker colours. I have a short commute to work and in the end felt it was totally impractical. Am currently on the hunt for a dark grey winter coat Grin - This is just something to think about when making your choice.

FiveOrangePips · 06/09/2010 10:34

this is flattering and smart but could be dressed down for walking the dogs imho.

littlemissindecisive · 06/09/2010 11:11

love the john lewis one....might get in brown!

dingdong3 · 06/09/2010 11:17

My fav is the purple one...LOVE it! WANT IT!

BornToFolk · 06/09/2010 11:28

TopShop have some great coats in at the moment.

BornToFolk · 06/09/2010 11:30

Belted Boyfriend for example is lovely but not sure I can get past the zipped pockets (I have a strange aversion to zips!)

This is really nice too.

silver28 · 06/09/2010 11:59

I have a strong aversion to next clothes and although the great plains one is a nice shape I don't think the fabric looks that nice (or warm). I do however live the river island you've linked to - don't normally like river island either but think that coat looks lovely and just a bit different. And much younger than the others you've suggested.
