Would anyone like to "dress" me?

This is the situation:

I have, for ages, not had any money to spend on clothes. I live in jeans and very old t-shirts or nicer tops bought from charity shops. I know I am one of those people you see on Trinny and Susannah, or How to look good naked, wearing shapeless, sexless, boring clothes. TBH, I am sick of it and want to splash out on at least one nice new thing to wear.

I have never been much into style and fashion but when I was younger and had the money, I would buy a few fairly trendy clothes regularly. I want to get back a tiny bit of that.

So, I have looked at what other people are wearing now and I like the dress over leggings/black tights with boots look. I don't know if I am too old for it (mid 40s) but I still have a reasonable figure (bit of middle aged spread setting in but still roughly size 12).

So can anyone help me find the right dress please? And should I go for leggings or tights? And where is the best place to buy them?

I saw this dress today. What do you think of it? It wasn't really what I had in mind (was thinking more of a floral, floaty type dress) but it looks cosy. Yes or no?

Can anyone suggest a floaty dress that would be good for me too? High street or mainstream online shop please.

There is nothing on your link!

If you want to look sexy, avoid black.

headinclouds101 · 03/09/2010 10:10

Your link takes me to Joe Brown - but not to a specific product.

Trying link again Scroll down for "ski bunny knit"

Oh, I find black such a turn on!

Oh stupid link. It works when I preview but not otherwise! If you want to see the knitted dress I mean, go to Womens clothing, knitwear, first page "ski bunny knit" - grey dress with red hearts on it.

LOL, it must be a fault with Joe Brown.

Can you say why you don't like it? I won't be offended.

Works on my PC, but sorry I don't like it.
It's a bit teenagery for me.

HooNose · 03/09/2010 10:33

Blush yes I am probably trying to relive my youth.

OK, so, more to the point, can anyone please help me find a dress that is more suitable to my years. I don't want to end up with some frumpy thing I won't wear (my usual mistake). I want to be as "young" as I can get away with, without looking a fool.

Under the dresses I like the perfect passion, you could wear that with leggings and boots. Leggings are nice for day time and tights to make things a bit posher.

I think dorothy perkins have some really nice tunic dresses at the moment. I don't know what kind of things you like...I think I like this

Feelingsensitive · 03/09/2010 11:27

I was just looking through the white stuff A/W catalogue and they have some tunice/dresses that may eb what you were thinking of. Need to sort out DCs but will check link and come back later.

naomi83 · 03/09/2010 13:14

this would look fab with brown or black boots and leggings, and would suit most colourings
I also like this this and this from M&S, not too young looking

HooNose · 03/09/2010 13:25

Thanks for the suggestions. I suppose I was thinking more along these lines

Too old though?

Sorry, I can't respond right away but I will be back looking for dresses tonight. Smile

There are really good dresses on Monsoon
If you look at the Fusion section then they are cheaper than the main lines as well
