Mad Men inspired wardrobe

chocolatefroggie · 02/09/2010 23:10

So I am completely obsessed with Mad Men at the moment, particularly the clothes. Grin
I have every intention of furnishing my wardrobe with a few pieces that channel the look, particularly in light of the lady like trend that's fashionable this a/w.
Anyone care to join me in the hunt for some lovely pieces, or just to ooh over the loveliness of the costumes Smile

I will start this is definately going in my shopping trolley to be worn with cashmere cardigan's, platform pumps skinny belt and the pearls dh bought me.

Very nice! Am I right in saying that the skirt is more Peggy than Joan? I like it though.

Sorry - I can't offer any advice because I am about as stylish as...someone who is not on Mad Men... but I adore the show, swoon over the costumes and salute your efforts to bring them into the mainstream. I will watch with interest!

chocolatefroggie · 02/09/2010 23:54

Grin @ always I'm hoping it's more betty than joan but we will see when it arrives!

Lovely clothes Shock at the prices.

chocolatefroggie · 03/09/2010 00:25

Blush I know but it's lovely Grin especially the kids clothes, they have very good sales tho' & I bought dd quite a few bits which have worn very well.

I think I would want to shop there, especially for the dc, though I really liked the red velvet dress for moi - surely the sale prices are still quite steep?

chocolatefroggie · 03/09/2010 00:39

Yes, but up to 70% off so, as it's good quality I justify it - and hide the evidence from dh Grin I've never bought stuff for me before but I'm going to order that skirt tomorrow unless I find something cheaper in the meantime.

What I want to know is, is it compulsory to wear those weird bras which project the boson skywards from the armpits. :o

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 03/09/2010 08:41

I love those bras. I have one; it's amazing.

echt · 03/09/2010 08:42

I mean the bosom; the boson is some hypothetical sub-atomic particle.

pagwatch · 03/09/2010 08:46

I am a bit pissed off tbh. I have had kitten heels and full flared skirts with fitted cashmere jumpers plus several audrey dresses for a few years now. and some vintage box handbags.
I have always liked that style and built a nice mini wardbrobe that isn't 'period' but just references the period
Suddenly they are going to be all over the place for a season or two and next year I will have to put them away for three or four years as they will just look like last seasons left overs [sigh]

Tootiredforgodtyping · 03/09/2010 09:46

great plains have a lot of mad men stuff this season, as does phase eight. Seems to be the main trend in 30+ shops whereas topshop seems to be channeling the grunge/crusty look of 1992.

ShirleyKnot · 03/09/2010 09:50

Yes Pag!

I have actual 50's vintage stuff and have done for about 10 years. The last time there was this revival of 50's fashion it was all packed away for about 3 years. Sad (and now I can't fit into any of it)

Although on the bright side I do love the look and it will be nice to get a few "new" pieces

missbeehiving · 03/09/2010 10:02

I love 50's fashion and have done since I discovered my mum's wardrobe at 16! It's so flattering and have vintage pieces but have also bought from Fever more recently. I am loving thisatm with a pencil skirt, heels and a bag for work.

ShirleyKnot · 03/09/2010 10:08

no no no no no no no.

I'm giong to have to hide this thread. That jacket is GORGEOUS.

I might buy it in a size too small to push my weight loss on.

tartyhighheels · 03/09/2010 10:10

Hasn't the costume designer for Mad Men got a clothing line herself??

ShirleyKnot · 03/09/2010 10:13

Foundation garments

chocolatefroggie · 03/09/2010 13:24

Yes Pag me too I've always channeled that sort of look, but I'm quite excited that I might actually be in fashion now Grin I have a wardrobe full of belted full skirt summer dresses but never been able to translate it to winter without looking like I'm off to a wedding so have always ended up in jeans.
tarty I was hoping that was something I had imagined - you are very naughty to even mention it Grin I will bankrupt dh at this rate
Shirleyknot I won't be taking it this far!

chocolatefroggie · 03/09/2010 13:33

Love the jacket btw, I'm looking for a long winter coat as I already have a jacket.
I thought this looked rather like an autumn inspired version of this

happywheezer · 03/09/2010 13:41

The problem is Marc Jacobs and Prada have done a lot of super elegant 50's stuff and it's what has been copied in the shops.

ShirleyKnot · 03/09/2010 14:46

haha, that bra is called Doreen

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 03/09/2010 16:18

missbehive LOVE that jacket!

this one from H and M (uk site online next week) is longer and cheaper - not quite so nice but an acceptable compromise (and I think H and M might issue a nice discount code as they go online (crosses fingers)

pagwatch · 03/09/2010 16:24

The prada stuff is lovely. i am going to get the kitten heels with the bow - just need to chose colour.
And I like the Louis Vuitton but will have to try it first as I have no boobs. But that is definately a buy and wear to death then put away for DD in about ten years time.
