Not Your Daughters Jeans -or jeans you'd recommend

What's the verdict? I want jeans that fit well - no builders bottom, muffin top, lumpy legs - without having to have radical plastic surgery. I'm size 12 (ish) - sort of apple-ish, so legs and bum are ok but tummy more of a problem area. I've had Gap long and lean and Fat Face jeans but wonder if these nydj are good and look good - really don't want frumpy mum jeans. Where do you get your jeans? I'm about to return to work and might splash out and treat myself...

For boot cuts and smart jeans - French Connection. Jack Wills are also excellently cut and finished but bloody pricy.

For skinny jeans - there are no better than Next. £25 and good sretchy material which doesn't bag.

Topshop Baxters - useless imo. Baggy arsed.

Gap - unflattering.

VictoriousSponge · 02/09/2010 12:56

river island is good for pears

and monsoon

chocoholic · 02/09/2010 13:24

Oasis scarlet jeans are my favourites.

traceybath · 02/09/2010 13:27

Nudies are good for apples.

I find next are a bit cheap looking denim wise and they put funny stuff on them but do like the shape.

Baxters are ok but you need to handwash and never ever tumble dry.

CHOOGIRL · 02/09/2010 13:42

I wear Seven for all Mankind and recommend. On a separate point NYDJ is a really bad choice of brand name. Everytime I hear it I think middle-aged..

thighsmadeofcheddar · 02/09/2010 13:44

Oh yes Sevens are great. Love them.

AngryPixie · 02/09/2010 13:56

NYDJ are a great fit but always look a bit frumpy on. I only ever wear mine on 'fat days' Grin

traceybath · 02/09/2010 14:01

Choo - I so agree and also my mil has a pair - and I really don't want to be channelling that look Wink

Oh yes I also like sevens - particularly the roxanne.

I had a look at the NYDJ in John Lewis today. To be honest I wasn't that impressed, they looked very "middle aged American" in cut and are expensive.

I like Boden going out jeans, sadly they don't have them in this seasons collection so I might try the Bootleg ones.

If you have good legs then maybe try skinny jeans with a tunic top. I got reasonable skinny jeans from Mint Velvet although they are a bit long for me.

rewardgirl · 02/09/2010 15:40

Oh that link is hilarious!! I used to live in the US and they do all wear those hideous jeans!! Why? WHY???

mackerel · 02/09/2010 16:41

That confirms my sneaking suspiscion that the NYDJ are a bit frumpy. As you say, the clue is in the name. I have had Next ones which were great initially but didn't wear well. Thanks for the suggestions - a coupleof brands I've not heard of so will check them out.

The NYDJ are definitely frumpy. I have seen them and they are not good! They are sold in the old lady shop in my town too so won't be getting them for about another 40 years!

Annner · 02/09/2010 21:43

Disagree there! I love mine, and I don't think that I am an old lady. Far nicer than a camel's foot or muffin top, and blimmin sight more flattering.

dexter73 · 02/09/2010 22:04

You can buy nice jeans that don't give you a camel's foot or muffin top without looking like a middle aged American!

dexter73 · 02/09/2010 22:07

These for example, are beyond hideous!

teahouse · 03/09/2010 17:59

Annner I'm with you. I too have NYDJs and they are great. They are comfortable and not at all frumpy. I love them, and bought mine from a boutique that sells lots of funky stuff uncluding God Save the Queen designer wear; def not frumpy

nikki1978 · 03/09/2010 19:02

I think the NYDJ look frumpy too. Personally I look for something that sits of the hip bone then I wear spanx (higher power ones) to smooth out the muffin top. High waisted jeans are not good.

HLaurens · 03/09/2010 19:12

Someone on here recommended those NYDJ a while back, so I went and looked at them in John Lewis. Frumpy, cheap looking, and American is what I thought. Put them with a Brooks Brothers Twin set and a pair of white trainers and you'll be effortlessly channelling the American soccer mom look (I lived in America for four years, so I've seen it plenty!)

In my quest for nice jeans my favourites so far are Lucky Brand and a Marc O'Polo pair I just bought in Sweden.

purplepeony · 03/09/2010 19:29

Uniqlo- a recent convert. Gap don't fit me, Next too low rise, have never tired any expensive brands. Uniqlo were £14.99 ofr skinny mid rise and best fit I've had for ages.
If you get to their London store they machine hems to your own length for 2.99.
Brilliant for me as I am about a 28-29 leg, but not petite anywhere else.

Monkeytoo · 04/09/2010 03:52

Bit expensive but if you want to go high end then Citizens of Humanity Amber cut jeans are fab. They have the really nice washes and quality of Seven but are higher on the rise (about an inch under my belly button) so no muffin top and tummy flattering. I have a problem tummy too and love them.

LaraJade · 04/09/2010 08:30

Try New Look. I have 2 pairs of skinny (but not too skinny) jeans from there year ago have washed almost weekly, cheap (less than 25 quid) + still look good (am 34 with tummy btw). My sis (31) swears by Dorothy Perkins skinnies, look v nice.

PeggysEvilTwin · 04/09/2010 08:40

Just got me a pair of vivienne Westwood for lee jeans. Surprisingly inexpensive and very very flattering, she does clothes for normal women. No muffin top because they go right upto your waist. I've got the skinny black ones.

moragbellingham · 04/09/2010 11:21

Yes, I've finally found someone else who likes Lucky brand!
I bought some a few years back in the US but can't get into them anymore although have still kept them for reference (sentimental)purposes.

They're a fab fit, if you can find them here I don't know?
If anyone finds some, please tell meSmile
