How to walk in high heels?

purplefeet · 25/08/2010 19:32

I have size 2 feet and have always struggled to walk in heels of more than about 1 inch. Does anyone have any tips on how to walk in high heels as I'd love to be able to wear some killer heels without falling over.

Thanks.

its a completely different posture to wearing flats and uses different muscles, so will take practice.

Push your hips forward a bit to keep your balance and don't stick your bum out :-)

Maybe start with chunky heels rather than stilettoes, or wedges.

Drink 4 cranberry cosmolitans in quick sucession, it'll then feel easy.

I'm also a novice heel walker, but learning slowly. I found the biggest thing for me was to maintain good posture - I have a tendency to stoop and round my shoulders, and as soon as I did that in heels, I'd fall forwards.

Good video here:

Wear some heels every day for a short time, round the house or popping over the shop. This helps the muscles get used to wearing them.

Oh, what I also did was got some really cheap bog standard heels from ebay, and practiced wearing them around the house.

You have to think about walking on tiptoes and throwing your weight forward a bit, onto the balls of your feet rather than heels (which may mean pushing chest out a bit....), and holding yourself up straight.

Just holding yourself high without tiptoes ends up with bum sticking out Smile

OK, am confused, why is walking on heels so difficult, did you not practice with your mums? I found my 22mnth old climbing into my 6" leopard print (grrrr) peep toe stiletto's tonight, and I had to rescue her from a great fall...Grin

She regularly goes into my wardrobe....already!

Maybe our mums were frumpy feminists who refused to have heels or bras in the house, and buggered off when we were 5 years old to "find themselves"?

Bitter? Me? Grin

Maryqueenofchocs · 26/08/2010 10:14

Oh Naetha thats beyond crap......you need to revolt to her feminist ways and get yourself into Agent Provocateur undies and buy some heels to strutt around in!Smile

Take them to the supermarket with you, stick them on when you get the trolley and use it as a stroller until you get the hang of the balancing. Is also a good excuse to walk slowly.

ZinglebertBembledank · 26/08/2010 11:04

I think it helps to start with chunkier heels that have height but more surface area touching the floor IYSWIM.

For example:

These will be easier to walk in than these

willowstar · 26/08/2010 11:14

i second the wearing them to the supermarket advice. I had to go to a very glam conference with about 4 posh dinners and realised I could escape the heals no longer so I got used to them by wearing them around the house at first then out to the supermarket where the trolley helps.

I felt very glam swishing round in them and it helped me gain confidence in general.

I had read it is all about putting the weight on the ball of the foot first and kind of gliding, not bending your knees and letting your hips sway.

Thank you everyone. I will get some heels off ebay and practice in my local supermarket, though probably not the one DH works in!

Maryqueenofchocs - my mum had a hip replacement just after I was born. She is 4ft 10 and they didn't make the joints small enough for her. She ended up with one leg much longer than the other and had to have a built up shoe. So no heels for me to practice in.

Naethea - I watched the video. Just need a strong man to carry me around!
