Stylish but practical slippers = oxymoron?

I am looking for something that:

  • is neither a fluffy per una mule nor a £50 piece of knitted cashmere
  • has a sole that can withstand the odd trip outside when I need to chase the postman down the street etc (not something I do regularly!)
  • is not pale pink, beige or grey marl

-my grandmother would not consider wearing

  • for a gold star, can go in the washing machine occasionally (when DD2 spills poster paint on it)

What do the wise and avid Mumsnetters choose?

There were some nice boot type slippers in the White Company last year. They must have something similar this year.

Am very much with you on the Per Una monstrosities. Ugh.

greenlotus · 24/08/2010 22:26

Well I'm quite attached to my Nordikas mules , also how about Coolers? (but I am not wise & avid person so just outing myself as a comfort shoe wearer!)

Muji

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 24/08/2010 22:35

Babouches?
Celtic Sheepskin?

herethereandeverywhere · 24/08/2010 22:38

try again!

Muji

Rindercella · 24/08/2010 22:39

Schnitzel beat me to it, but these are cheaper

Bishoplyn · 24/08/2010 22:46

Rindercella - great website. Thanks for sharing :)

wildfig · 24/08/2010 22:51

I have these

Kiwi Sheepskin

suspect they may fall into the 'grandma slipper' category, but they don't look too pensionery on me. [in my head, anyway] Main thing is they're gorgeously warm, don't smell because they're sheepskin, and the soles are good for walking around outside in snow, rain, etc.

My SIL gave me a pair of White Co boot things - they were v synthetic and made my feet sweaty and tetchy.

Rindercella · 24/08/2010 22:51

A pleasure. Smile I love them and would thoroughly recommend them. They do fab kids' stuff too. Smile

Pendulum · 25/08/2010 07:15

Wow, thanks everyone. I love the babouches in particualr, and thanks Rindercella for fnding them at my preferred price point!

The muji ballets are nice too but the link doesn't say what they're made of- do you have a pair herethereandeverywhere?

Schnitzelvankrum- just wanted to say great name. We all love the Hairy McClary books and my DDs love to shout out "with the very low tum" every time!

Whats wrong with bare feet... or shoes...

Slippers are just wrong. Someone shoot me before I buy a pair please, so in answer to your initial question - stylish and practical slippers are an oxymoron LOL

Lastyearsmodel · 27/08/2010 17:39

Rindercella Genius website, thank you!

Have been coveting Haflingers as they are lovely and reputed to last for years but at that price, they would have to Smile. Also, their new styles are due in September, so hanging on for a few weeks.

Slippers for me have to be all of OP's requirements plus stain-masking colour - just had to throw out lovely pale red pair as toes black with muck from kneeling down to help DC's, clear floors, etc.

Now, can Rindercella find me a long, cotton jersey or flannel dressing gown in a lovely yet stain-disguising colour, please? Grin

Rindercella · 27/08/2010 22:48

Now lastyearsmodel, I can do slippers but however hard I look, I just cannot find you the dressing gown you are after! (but if you do find it, can you let me know cos it sounds v handy!)

MrsCadwallader · 28/08/2010 06:58

Ok, so they fall down slightly on the 'stylish' bit, but I gave up on slippers last year because I was fed up with the rate at which I wore through them and bought some of these instead.

Before you say it - I know, I know! Blush but they are seriously wonderful for wearing around the house! They are SO warm, they don't go all sloppy on your feet and you can pop outside in them (whilst obviously glancing around to ensure none of your neighbours can see you!). I LOVE them.

Just a suggestion.....

MrsCadwallader · 28/08/2010 06:59

Oh! And they are a doddle to clean, as I discovered to my joy when DS3 vommitted copiously all over mine Grin. The fleece insert bit goes in the washing machine, and the rubber outer in the washing up bowl. Sorted!

Lastyearsmodel · 28/08/2010 14:04

Appreciate your efforts, Rindercella - I seem to be searching for the new Holy Grail.

People raved about last year's Boden dressing gown but, of course, they're not doing one this year. I'll keep searching...

Zembo · 28/08/2010 18:34

I had a pair of babouches last year (bought from Morocco rather than UK website, but the same as far as I can tell). Looked great but the soles are very thin so strictly for indoor wear I think.

aftereight · 29/08/2010 22:12

I continue to wear my summer flipflops indoors as slippers in winter.
So, this year, as last, it's sequinned fitflops ..
