What socks would you recommend as good quality and good value?

I was looking at some cotton/cashmere from the John Lewis partnership reduced from £9 to £5. Not a bad reduction, but it seemed to me, not all that cheap either. And - the autummn is drawing in - the allure of warm feet cocooned in soft luxury suddenly seemed very appealing. But where from?

GAP always seem to keep their colour and elasticity for a basic sock.
