Is there such a thing as a smart but ultra practical school run outfit for SAHMs? What do you all wear?

I am busy mum of 3 under 7.

As such most of my day consists of rushing about from school drop off, toddler groups...etc...etc...

However, one of the things I dislike most about being a mum is looking so scruffy all the time.

I used to be so well groomed, and now I am all flat shoes and no make-up Sad.

So anyway, I will likely spend most of the winter in jeans.

Please help me find some boots and a coat to go with them which make me look respectable whilst still being rush-around friendly?

Whats your budget?

How about
military jacket

brown buckle boots

I'm in the same boat - three under 6, used to love looking smart and co-ordinated at work but now spend my life in jeans.
A gorgeous coat is a great way to smarten up any outfit - loving the one maryqueen posted above. I got a couple of short belted macs in the Boden sale. Only the checked one left, which I ordered yesterday. A bit unsure of it but thought it might just work with jeans.

I also love longer tunics as I find normal length tops ride up when bending down at mother toddler groups. Again, Boden have a few in the sale

I do lots of layering too - and use long scarves and chunky necklaces to pick up the colours.

But still end up covered in dirt/food/slobber at the end of the day... Grin

I usually pull on sweatpants or nylon pants over pajamas and drop them off at the curb. Blush No makeup and hair not attended to much either.

I really hate the fashion parade outside school. The most effort I have ever made (only a few times, like the first day of school) was to actually dress and put on lipstick, and then it would be jeans, or the nylon pants without pajamas underneath, plus a black jacket.

No reason why jeans can't look smart. A scarf dresses up any outfit - blue jeans, white t-shirt - add a scarf it transforms the overall look.

And tinted moisturiser, mascara and a light lippy or even lip balm make loads of difference, again, all very low-effort.

mamatomany · 18/08/2010 21:02

Ah you'll be needing the school run dress, covered by the school run coat Grin where is the rolling on the floor laughing icon Wink

sincitylover · 18/08/2010 22:14

that mac isvery nice

I'm not a SAHM but my workplace is casual

summer uniform - tunic and leggings or interesting tshirt and linen trousers/cropped jeans

autumn/winter - knitted dress, leggings/opaque tights and boots or jumper and jeans

working from home - track/yoga pants and top - parka if cold

boring but effective

agree with grumble white top, jeans and a scarf round your neck.

find a style of jean and top that suits you. i am short with a small chest so v-necks look too low on me. i have a few white round neck vest tops and i wear thes with dark straight leg jeans and black pumps. i love the military style jackets and coats but for some reason the neck line jsut doesn't suit me i got a lovely red coat in new look with a sort of ruffled round neck look. it is a reall simple outfit but that is the joy of it.

oops i was wrong my coat was out of DV8 but i can't find a link.

Buy a smart coat and good boots and then it doesn't matter what you wear underneath.Tk Maxx is really good for coats at a reasonable price.Washable down coats are a good bet as are dark coloured wool ones.Go sans kids or with just one in a pushchair[and bribe with something!],I did this last year. For intermediate temps try a quilted or otherwise trench coat.Buy a pair of really comfortable boots that go with everything[duo is good].Add either a scarf or earrings or necklace[ cheapy - from Matalan or anywhere]]to add colour.I find M&S basic leggings brilliant in winter and more comfortable than jeans [under boots].Try to use something that evens out skin colour.as pinched blue looking faces [in cold weather]is not a good look. Finally i often wear hats [as never have time to dry hair-4 dc's!].

dingdong3 · 19/08/2010 08:49

That coat sounds lovely boo ....which DV8 did you get it in? Because I so need another coat!

twinsagogo · 19/08/2010 09:50

great boots on sale here www.charlotteandco.co.uk/special-offers/clearance/long-sheepskin-boots
but only one size left. they are more stylish and grown-up than the dreaded uggs but just a comfy and practical.
