Do boots which are wide on the calf look OK or rubbish?

I like these in black, but tried them on and they're really big round the calf (and my calves are ample in any case Grin). Would that look OK or strange, and would I get some kind of bizarre calf chafing? Opinions appreciated, don't hold back Smile

Silly question, but don't M&S do a narrower version of these?.Do they not make your legs look clumpy?.

Bousy · 18/08/2010 13:34

I haven't seen a narrower version - I need the width on the foot, but not that much width further up. I can't decide if they make my legs look clumpy or actually slim and gazelle-like because they don't fill the boots...

Do you mean, wide as in loose on your leg or wide as in tight on your wide leg?

cece · 18/08/2010 13:40

You can get a near perfect fit from here

Bousey Duo are brilliant[i bought 3 pairs in the winter sale!] but very expensive-but worth it.M&S are very reasonably priced and very popular. Can you go back and try the normal calf-widths and see if you fit in to them.Failing that find boots that have elastic inserts in them that will accommodate different calf widths.

Bousy · 18/08/2010 14:46

cece they are extremely wide, as in wide on my not-narrow leg Smile. The Duo boots are beautiful but look quite narrow through the foot, which is where I really need the width.

teta the problem is that the normal calf-widths are also normal foot-widths, which are too narrow and uncomfortable for me.

Thanks for the replies - the consensus seems to be that strangely loose-fitting calves are best avoided!

Bousy - seriously, go to Duo. If you're in London or Bath you can go into the shops. They do different foot width fittings as well as calf width fittings.

Once you go to Duo, you never go anywhere else.

And, I agree, I'd avoid those M&S ones.

Boots which are overly wide always look much worse from behind than they do from the front, in my opinion. They seem to take on an odd piratey swagger and caricature any slight inelegance in a person's gait. That's just what I think though, I am probably a bit weird about this issue and had no boots for years because I couldn't get them to fit just so and had a horror of a piratical back view.

teta · 18/08/2010 14:54

Can you not measure your foot width[instructions on the Duo website] and then phone them up and see what they recommend.I would have thought they'd be helpful as they also do shoes in different widths.Surely as the calf width increases for each boot the foot width will increase as well.Tis worth a try!.

Oooh I am seriously leaning towards Duo, thanks for the advice. Have had a good nose round their website and the boots certainly are lovely.

Heartsease actually I would quite like a piratical back view Grin but probably better planned than accidental...

I have very wide feet and the duo boots are good. I think the ones I have two pairs of are called something like malmo.

HalfTermHero · 18/08/2010 22:50

Loving the notion of a piratical back view. I have a pair of heeled boots that are loose at the top of my (skinny) calves. I quite like the look and wear them now and again with a mini and opaques.

Heartsease · 19/08/2010 10:21

Bousy, I didn't mean to imply that there isn't a time and a place for a piratical back view Grin.

FindingMyMojo · 19/08/2010 10:34

I disagree about Duo - I ordered two pairs from them a couple of years back but in reality the leather was sooo thin and of such poor quality they looked really cheap. I sent them right back - the boots were over £120 a paid so I'd expect more than just a fit in the calf for that money. They do look nice on the website though - but alot of poorly made stuff does.
