Need advise on a waterproof jacket for boys, 4-5 year

A few days ago I asked parents to help me with the waterproof trousers and their suggestions were very helpful!

Now I want to find a good waterproof jacket for my son going to be 5 this autumn. Last year he had a very nice jacked, fleece lined. I want to find something like that.

Here what I have found:

  1. Kiba Plain Jacket, £18.99
www.waterproofworld.co.uk/kibajackets.htm
  1. Millets Value Boy's Fleece Lined Shower Jacket £10.00
www.millets.co.uk/clothing/children/jackets/product/042292.html
  1. Reversible Waterproof Fleece Lined Rain Jackets, £26.00
www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/sp+Rainwear-Accessories-Reversible-Waterproof-Fleece-Lined-Rain-Jackets+A8510

I have a few products from Jojomaman and they are great, very good quality and have generous fit. I wish they were slightly cheaper.

  1. Something from Regatta
www.sun-togs.co.uk/catalog/231
  1. Muddy Puddles Boys Rainflex Jacket, £14.95
www.sun-togs.co.uk/products/804

I want to buy a jacket which would be suitable for autumn and spring. I want it to be fleece lined or to have a very thick material suitable for cold days. He has a jacket for winter but nothing for September.

Would appreciate your suggestions very much!

I know that Aldi/Lidl sell nice waterproof jackets for kids but I think they sell them only once a year.

I have found this jacket from Regatta. It is waterproof and fleece lined. £16.99. Has anyone seen it or tried it?

I always buy Regatta and find them fantastic. I know that the term time coat is used by lots of schools as uniform and has very good reviews. The 3 in 1 ones with the fleece which zips inside are good too, as you can use them when it is milder and wet and also when it is really cold and wet.

Octavia09 · 17/08/2010 13:50

domesticsluttery, thanks. How generous is the jacket? I know that for example Jojomaman is very generous. If you buy a jumper for a 5 year old then it means for the whole year.

Here with Regatta I do not know which size to choose, 4-5 or 5-6? How it is for your child (ren)?

Regatta are pretty good, I would rate them. I tried the muddy puddles rainflex jacket and sent it back as I didn't like the (green) colour & it was very long. But love the rainflex trousers, material is really fab. They're great quality.
I don't think you need to pay much over £20 for a decent jacket. JoJo great but it doesn't look like a technical jacket to me IMO, just a fun one and 5yo boys need something pretty sturdy.
Have you looked on little trekkers, they're doing good deals. The spotty otter jacket might fit the bill, v.good reviews on that one from amazon and other places. Looked for an adjustable peaked hood btw, I didn't realise how useful they were until I had a jacket without one.
I have the bush baby one (from little trekkers) in 3 different sizes for my older boys as I think they're great but they're not fleece lined. I prefer a lightweight jacket and then a jumper/fleece underneath, more flexible.

domesticsluttery · 17/08/2010 14:07

DS2 is 6, but is small for his age. He has an age 5-6 Regatta coat which still fits him. He has had it since last September.

I would go for the 5-6.

Octavia09 · 17/08/2010 14:17

accessorizequeen, I do not want to pay more than £20.00 for a jacket really. Thre are so many things to buy for the school.

I might go either for the Kiba jacket or for the Regatta term-time. It looks as the latter one costs around £23.00 incl. delivery. Could not find cheaper.

Went to TK Max this weekend They have very nice jackets for winter but nothing for the rainy days.

I will check little trekkers. Many thanks.

Now I want to get a waterproof jacket for myself :)

Thanks domesticsluttery. My son's size is 110 although he is shorter than that. I think I will have to measure him and then the size on the website. I do not like sending things back as most of the time you have to pay the return fees.

Spotty Otter Fleece Lined Jacket looks very good indeed but nothing in his size. Other shops sell it in full prise.

I have noticed that some more expensive jackets from Regatta are breathable but the school term-time are not. I wonder why. I also wonder whether the latter jackets make the kids sweat more or they are fine. You know if material is not breathable then it is like wearing a plastic bag and this is what I do not want my son to experience. By the way, has anyone seen this website? www.countyschoolwear.co.uk/index.php?wcId=2&ctId=3&display=

They have lots of schoolwear but do not show the prices. The jackets on the picture look the same as Regatta ones.

IME, you get what you pay for Octavia Grin I think if you keep looking you'll get a really good one marked down, seems to be a good time to buy.

Octavia09 · 22/08/2010 12:18

accessorizequeen, you write me the same answer for 2nd time. "you get what you pay", blah-blah. No need for sarcasm. I know there are very good jackets costing more than £25.00 but I believe there is something nice for less than that. I also know that some brands can be just overpriced. That is why I am asking other mums for their suggestions.

OP posts:
accessorizequeen · 22/08/2010 13:46

I wasn't being sarcastic! And now you're just being rude, I was trying to help. I said you could get a nice one for under £20, so the on sale ones are great. At no point have I linked to expensive ones either so get off your high horse.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 22/08/2010 14:04

I always buy Reggatta for my boys, they really are very good.

We buy the ones you can zip the fleece into without the fleece IYSWIM, cost about £25 I think. This is the 2nd year both ds's have had their jackets and they look as good as new.

They also have winter coats for the cold weather so their raincoats are for the wet days all year round. In the winter if they wear them they just wear their school fleece or a sweater under.

Octavia09 · 22/08/2010 17:57

accessorizequeen, I am not being rude. Not at all. But then you put that grin after "you get what you pay" Grin.

I think the Regatta 3 in 1 are really nice. I might think about it or just buy a bomber jacket :)

accessorizequeen · 22/08/2010 18:14

well yes, you are being pretty rude as I haven't said the same thing twice which you've accused me of and pardon me but I was trying to HELP you. Not something I'll be doing again. Last time I checked a grin after a sentence didn't translate to having a go at someone. Which I wasn't, why the hell would I?

Octavia09 · 22/08/2010 21:45

accessorizequeen, writing is not the same as talking that is why I thought you have been sarcastic because of that grin after saying you get what you pay after I had mentioned I wanted to buy something not expensive. Usually people say "you get what you pay" when you buy something cheap and then it does not last long.
Well, I do apologise for accusing you for saying things twice. It was once. I thought it was mentioned before but it was not. Silly me. Really, really sorry Blush, Blush, Blush.

And you did try to help me indeed.

OP posts:
Octavia09 · 22/08/2010 21:58

I think I misundesrtood you because I thought it was said twice. Otherwise I would not have paid attention to it. I feel very silly and sad. I do understand why you thought I have been a rude "whoever".

OP posts:
accessorizequeen · 23/08/2010 12:49

S'alright Octavia, just couldn't understand why you were having a go at me! All I meant was you get what you pay for thus buy a good make at discount price. Hope you find something.

Octavia09 · 23/08/2010 14:18

Sorry accessorizequeen :( Misunderstanding is not an excuse but I am sorry. Thanks for suggestions.

OP posts:
accessorizequeen · 24/08/2010 21:13

Don't worry about it, it's no problem.

DomesticG0ddess · 25/08/2010 21:29

I have been v happy with a Muddy Puddles raincoat I got for DS on eBay

EasilyConfusedIndith · 25/08/2010 21:36

Oh good you've made up :)

Another regatta fan here. I got ds one with the fleece that zips in, I got it way too big for him, it has been well used already and still has plenty of life in it. Sizing seems pretty generous.

Octavia09 · 25/08/2010 22:45

Thanks EasilyConfusedIndith :) That day was probably foggy (in my head).
I have got a jacket but it is with a padded lining so not sure about it now. I bought it from Pumpkin Patch. It is black jeans material with special shower resistant coating with zips and pockets. Looks cool like a leather jacket. It has a hood for the rain. It is not on their website. My DS likes it. I bought it and did not check the padding. I do not want another winter jacket but then I have not seen Regatta jackets in the shops to compare. It was £18.00 and for £20.00 you get a waterproof jacket at John Lewis which does not look suitable for the everyday use. I have 28 day to return. I have already forgotten what is like in September.
