Please describe to me the sort of clothes your 9-12 year old girls wear, and tell me where you shop for them?

Having difficulty shopping for dd (9.5). She is too tall for children's clothes, but too young (imo) to wear sophisticated/trendy small sized adult clothes that might suit teens.

What do you do when they're too big for Mini-Boden or Gap For Kids (or similar), but too young/immature for the full Top Shop trendy teen fashion scene?

Seems that the clothing market for 'tween girls' (ugh - hate that phrase but don't know how else to describe) is desperately underserved.

What do your dd's wear, and where do you shop for them?

And specifically - what is on your/their shopping list for fall/winter? And what about shoes?

Help please!

Do people really buy that awful, over-priced Jack Wills stuff for pre-teens? Even my teenagers think it's an obscene rip-off. They don't need a hoodie for street cred! Wink

Jane Norman is truly vile imho.

My 13 year old currently lives in:

skinny jeans and a t-shirt with converse-type pumps

or a denim skirt and a t-shirt

or a denim dress. We got her quite a few bits in the Warehouse sale (eg dress for a tenner, skinnies ditto).

She wants some tan flat brogues for Autumn.

Oh also denim or black shorts over opaques.

H&M and zara mostly

sometimes gap, boden, new look

she wears:

skinny jeans long tops/tunics

shorts/short skirts/denim dress over leggings/opaques

knee length boots or baseball boots or converse type trainers

short baggy suede boots

she dislikes waistcoats but i think they are cute over long t shirt/shirt

cropped black jacket or denim jacket

long boyfriend style cardigan or various hoodies

My 12 year old is into the skinny jeans, hoodie and converse type shoe look.

She bought a hoodie and t-shirt from Superdry from her birthday money as she can fit into xs.

Fat Face sometimes has the odd thing, you just have to pop by to check regularly.

She is very skinny in the leg department and the only jeans that fit well and are not too baggy round the bum are Zara - they go up to age 13/14.

H & M is another winner in this house, some of it is a load of tat but you have to rake around.

Depending on shoe size (dd is nearly a 6), T K Maxx is good to look for Converse and Vans etc as sometimes they have one off, odd American styles. (I have a pair that are Chuck Taylors but a design I have never seen here which were only £20).

Agree with MariaLuisa about the Moonsoon stuff it is very twee and a ridiculous amount of money. You could get the shorts and jeggings for half the money in New Look etc. But then perhaps on a little French girl some of it may look ok (sorry Bonsoir).

tibni · 19/08/2010 22:09

New Look mainly but TU at Sainsbury sometimes has some decent items. Sports shops and TK Maxx are worth having a look at/

BelligerentGhoul · 19/08/2010 22:10

Miss Selfridge do teeny tiny adult sizes and dd2 has got a coupleof things from there - all sale stuff.

KristinaM · 19/08/2010 22:12

we are awaiting delivery of yen Fly boots in red and yearn in green

sadly the marta were sold out in her size

jennylindinha · 19/08/2010 22:26

DSD (11) is very tall but can usually find good stuff in H&M. She has also got one or two ncie things in adult size 8/10 from there and Dorothy Perkins/New Look etc.

A tip for H&M, head ye to the one in High St Kensington. Much quieter and less like a jumble sale. It's got all departments (inc. Menswear) too, over 3 floors and I love it! (I work nearby thank goodness...) Lots of other shops there too so worth the trip.

BrittanyBeers · 19/08/2010 22:43

My 8yo is tall and wears age 9-10 from Fat Face, New Look, Gap, H&M, Zara, and Sainsbo's.
Mainly FF.

Shoes are a huuuge issue though. She is size 2, which is too big for children's shoes and too small for adults. There are about 4 styles in the whole world in size 2.Angry
She wants slip-ons for school.
I want "sensible shoes".
We are thiking these.

teta · 20/08/2010 02:23

Mainly Next sadly. We live in the country and the nearest kids shop is 12 miles away!.I can dash in with dd and 3 little dc's in tow and bribe them with a Mcdonalds. My mum is really good at getting clothes she likes from Tk Maxx and closing-down boutiques [shes in her 70's].My 11 year old dd lives in jeans, t-shirts,waistcoats,hoodies,shorts and silver sneakers/wedge tory Burch flipflops.

My dd is 10 - she's quite tall and thin plus she is super fussy which means I find it very difficult to dress her. She is into skater type style stuff and will not wear anything girly, frilly, or fussy! Nightmare!

Although we recently went to the outlet place in Portsmouth and had great success in getting things for her, we shopped in:-
Gap, fat face, animal, o'neil, roxy, ripcurl (basically all the surfer / skater type brands)

I also shop in H&M, Next, Debenhams and New Look for her. H&M are esp good for plain cut and coloured basic t-shirts!
