What things are we keeping for our daughters?

Over the years my mum has often talked about the fashion and things she wished she had kept for when she was younger, i also wish she had kept things for me, her wedding dress for one. She did keep a lipstick and eyeshadow, which i insisted on wearing to parties when younger....she still has them, dont worry i'd never wear them again.

I'm now wondering what to keep for my own daughter....anyone else care to share?

My wedding dress, (50's style)
Alot of my principles dresses, lots of different styles in the collection
some of my knitwear

deaddei · 14/08/2010 11:50

Absolutely nothing.
I do not save things at all, clothes wise. It goes to the charity shop.
I don't think there's anything particularly lovely or classic about today's fashion.
My mum had amazing 1940s suits- her father was a ladies tailor.

pointydog · 14/08/2010 11:51

Nothing. How odd.

MrsDinky · 14/08/2010 11:55

I have a 20 year old pair of evening shoes (black, strappy, low heels) I was thinking the other day that at this rate she will end up with them. I do still wear them occasionally. I also have somewhere an old dress of my mum's that I used to love dressing up in, she can have that when she's older.

paisleyleaf · 14/08/2010 12:00

I've put my all over gold sequin vest top into her dressing up box, but I don't think that really counts.

carciofi · 14/08/2010 12:04

Wedding dress, scarves, bags.

traceybath · 14/08/2010 12:36

Handbags and jewellery I guess.

miche8 · 14/08/2010 12:39

Maybe thats the problem everything i buy is cheap throw away fashion could not imagine my daughter being excited about a new look item i'd kept.

Not married but a wedding dress is something i'd keep. My mum let me cut hers up for dolls clothes.

I'm keeping loads of things and I don't have a daughter yet Confused.

  • A 60s wool Scandinavian coat with sheepskin around the hood and bottom.
  • See by Chloe sequin puffball dress
  • Couple of beautiful 50s dresses
  • a 30s gown that will never fit me again.
  • D&G boned silk corset dress with a wool skirt.
  • Russell and Bromley platforms
  • My collection of vintage costume jewellery
  • loads of topshop etc. [useless, can't throw anything away emoticon]

Don't know who I'll give it to if I don't have a daughter.

EldonAve · 14/08/2010 13:04

I'm keeping my silver glitter ankle boots but that's it

I've still got a few Biba, Ossie Clark, Zandra Rhodes, Bruce Oldfield and assorted pieces from the 60s, 70s and 80s. I stopped buying expensive designer stuff when the DDs came along. I let the DDs borrow the old stuff but I expect it to be returned to me. All my old clothes have good memories for me. I still wear my old shoes though they pinch a bit but sadly I'm no longer a size 6 dress size.

dexter73 · 14/08/2010 17:30

I just asked my dd(13) if she would like me to keep any of my clothes, bags or shoes for her and she snorted at me and said 'you are kidding me!', so guess I won't be!

MrsBadger · 14/08/2010 17:38

wedding dress
silk satin evening dresses - all are floor length, bias cut, timeless and in excellent nick

also my choir clothes - all over black with long sleeves is hard to find at short notice [bitter experience]

nancydrewrocked · 14/08/2010 17:38

I thought it was just me Blush

I do conciously plan to leave my nice stuff to my DD although my day to day stuff all gets pretty much worn until it's trashed.

I do have a rack of dresses from Issa/Temperley/Max Azria/Vivienne Westwood/DVF/Reiss/Karen Millen (basically all my good stuff) which I shall one day bequeath along with some Jimmy Choo shoes and handbags and a lovely Chloe and Burberry bag.

I expect DD will go Hmm

Hazeyjane · 14/08/2010 17:43

A jumper that was my mums, very 1940s in the 70s style

a very retro shirt bought from a thrift shop in Paris

A pair of tank girl style boots bought in New York

I wish that my mum had kept some of the clothes I remeber her wearing when I was growing up - they were fabulous.

teameric · 14/08/2010 17:44

my more expensive bags probably, definately my jewellery, and the shoes I wore for my wedding maybe.

pagwatch · 14/08/2010 17:45

DD is nearly 8 and is bloody dibbing things. She also says 'can I have that when you die' with a troubling optimism in her voice.

I have a few really nice bits but won't list as it is just wardrobe showing off. They are kept in dustbags and regularly dry cleaned etc so will be in good condition.

She wants me to keep my wedding dress although also wants a new one Hmm.
I do have a fantastic velvet opera coak from the 1950s which belonged to my mother - which sounds flash except she nabbed it from the jumble in about 1970 Grin

DD is quite funny though - I am not sure how long this 'stage' will last. She likes clothes in a kind of a theatrical way and picks things out of Vogue, yet is incredibly tom boyish and very sporty and an average kid. All an odd mix really.

senua · 14/08/2010 17:47

I occasionally suggest that DD borrow some of my stuff and she does indeed go Hmm. She has nicked some scarves, and sometimes uses an evening bag, but that is about it.

Hopefully · 14/08/2010 17:53

I haven't got anything seriously designer (and also don't have a DD...), but if I did I'd probably keep it, as my sister and I have always been v grateful that my mother kept her Ossie Clark dresses and jackets (even more grateful when one dress paid for us to take a shopping holiday to New York a few years back Grin)

echt · 14/08/2010 17:53

I kept loads of vintage clothes for DD, and none of them fit her as she's taken after DH's side of the family and is about 36D while back in the day I was 36AA. :o

batsforlashes · 14/08/2010 17:56

My wedding dress
Any Diana Von Furstenburg dresses
Mulberry handbags

They have already raided the scarves and some of the sparkly evening handbags.

pagwatch · 14/08/2010 17:57

Aw echt that happened to me.
My mum saved me a beautiful Ozzie Clark dress ( again picked up at a jumble sale) but whilst it is marked as a 12 it is actually about an 8 in todays sizing. And had a deeply plunging neckline and I am boobless that doesn't suit me.

I sold it for her on ebay a year or two ago and she got nearly £400 for it which was fab.

unfitmother · 14/08/2010 17:59

Just my diamonds. Grin

megapixels · 14/08/2010 18:03

I have kept my wedding dress. And also I have a fairly good amount of the lacey fabric it was made with so that one of my dd could make their own dress if they want to.
