Oh I am besotted, it is the only catalogue/website I've sen so far where I actually love the clothes so much I want to go and live in the catalogue. Unfortunately I can't afford it ( except perhaps one bit in the sale) I would just love to have a ruched dress and one of the vintage style cardis with notched collar. Seriously thinking about bank robbing or prostitution...cause of my obsession

Agree the clothes are very nice. But they are SUCH a rip off - £200 for a standard cardi. Their reductions aren't even any good.

Can any one who buys Brora tell me why it is worth all that money?

iwilldothis · 12/08/2010 20:23

Shock ouch. expensive indeed.

Well, I have never bought a full price jumper or cardi, but had one 4 ply long aran style green cardi in the sale reduced from £350 to £100 which is lovely and looks like new after 3 years. The jersey liberty print dresses that are £95 this year and were £89 are much better quality than Boden, wash like a dream - I have one I paid full price for and one I got virtually new on ebay for £25. I also have 3 other items, a skirt, tweed pinafore dress and a blouse that I got on the second reduction in the sale ( first reduction v. poor, second reduction good)that are sort of wardrobe staples and will last forever, the pinafore dress is lined in silk! If I was really well off I'd buy one of everything, but this time I'm just thinking of one dress, in the sale.

I buy a fair bit of Brora (by 'a fair bit' I mean I have three cardigans, a cashmere dress and a jumper, but I like to imagine I'm rich and have more) and they have lasted amazingly compared to other cashmere I have bought.

Oldest of the cardigans is... hmmm... about 8 years old? And looks just as good as the one bought last winter. Unlike my M&S cashmere, which went terminally bobbly/wore out/shrank bit by bit (and I am a handwash obsessive) until after 5 years it wasn't wearable.

Would love to buy more of their stuff, but I can't really justify it for 'normal' clothes (I can make something similar for half the price, even using Liberty fabric).

pagwatch · 13/08/2010 08:03

I rarely buy it because my dads voice screams " £300 for a cardigan!!!!" in my head.

But I buy the thermal tops which are fantastic ( £30ish), incredibly comfortable and absolutely look like new after washing. And I get gloves and stuff and the tops for children for my DD ( also only about £20 ).

I have bought cashmere before much cheaper and you can tell that the Brora quality is genuinely fantastic. if you want to spend money on cashmere I can see why spending more to get really lasting quality would make long term sense.

ut I can never quite do it.

dexter73 · 13/08/2010 09:45

The quality of Brora cashmere really is excellent. I have some very old jumpers from them and they still look like new. I do look after them well - handwashed and kept in moth proof bags to protect my investment! Other cashmere jumpers I have had (including M&S) have ended up shrinking and bobbling.
The thermal tops are great and I have a few of them.
I have always bought mine in the sales as they tend not to sell out of them before and have paid about £120 for a cardigan and £60 for a tank top.

wildfig · 13/08/2010 09:56

I've got a couple of v flattering cropped round neck cardigans, bought in the sale, as well as a drawer of thermals and some tweedy skirts that look totally wrong anywhere with a pavement, but look great out walking the dog in the winter. That's the only drawback with Brora, for me, anyway - if you wear too much of it, and in the wrong place, you can look like you're in your own private "Life of Nancy Mitford" mini-series.

samsonara · 14/10/2010 19:21

Would also love to live in the those clothes, they have a clearance sale on in London at the moment, has anyone been, was it, is it worth going?

smugtandemfeeder · 14/10/2010 19:40

I also love Brora. My grandma is buying these for the children this christmas - spoilt

I have lots of cardigans and clothes for the chidren, all bought by my grandma. They all lasted well and use a cashmere comb to make them look like brand new every now and again.

Also love Johnstons of elgin. Its not as trendy as Brora but for classic cashmere it is the same quality and always slightly cheaper. Apart from the gold collection....

samsonara · 14/10/2010 20:03

ooh how nice, thanks for the link like the look of the cowl necks but like brigher colours

teej · 14/10/2010 21:32

veryconfused I too am lusting after that cardi. Even with the discount code on the codes thread it is out of my budget.
Was so depressed I used the code to get this instead, plus a stole for my DM for her Xmas pressie. Oh and this might have fallen into my basket as well because I needed a new scarf Hmm and am assuming I'll get years of use out of it...

Was thinking of trying to get to the clearance sale but don't know if I dare after that lot Blush

higgle · 15/10/2010 07:24

I have decided to be very disciplined with myself and save a little bit every month, then I will be able to afford one lovely full price item next august/september - except in the real world it will probably go on car repairs well before then.

hobbittoes · 15/10/2010 08:17

Anyone know when the sale will be online?

hobbittoes · 15/10/2010 20:22

.

samsonara · 15/10/2010 21:41

no sorry I don't but I had a look at their blog ( there's a link to the blog at the bottom of the online shop) they have a sales news section and by the looks of that they tend to have the AW in Jan, making final reductions in March, but they hopefully will have more 20% off codes

higgle · 16/10/2010 17:54

sale is always very late, after everyone elses and just when you think it will never happen! First reductions are poor and second reductions good.

samsonara · 18/10/2010 21:40

there's 30% off some of the dresses online at the moment

StephanieSays · 18/10/2010 21:45

Sale is v late, toward end of Jan iirc.

Does someone have a discount code? Will go and rummage.

Agree the cashmere is of better quality than some.

teej · 19/10/2010 11:37

Stephanie there is one right at the start of the discount codes thread in S&B that worked for me a couple of weeks ago - EASYAW10

Not sure if it is still valid but maybe worth giving it a go?

vintage4 · 19/10/2010 12:45

that dress is reduced to £95 on the website at the moment

vintage4 · 19/10/2010 12:46

only until October 24 so be quick if you like it Smile
