What baby clothes do I need for newborns

Hi,

I know we will get lots of presents and I know everyone says don't buy too much because you will end up not using much of it. So bearing that in mind I still have a question. We are expecting a winter baby and for various reasons won't see too many people early on so might not actually get as many presents early on as you might expect.

So what clothing do I need to buy in advance - presumably some sleepsuits - how many And if a winter baby do they also have vests under that? Then also presumably some kind of snowsuit for going outside? Socks and mitts? Hats? And do they sleep in sleepsuits and wear them in the day in which case I imagine they will get through a few a day?

What do you all suggest?

Thanks

Vests x 14, Sleep suits x 14, snowsuit x2, hat x 1, socks x 14 pairs, gro bag x 1.

Cardigans to go over sleepsuits when you go out

muslin cloths, you can never have too many

Muslins to wipe their faces/hands and to put on your shoulder when burping them.

I would buy just one snowsuit, tbh.

I also preferred the sleepsuits without feet and in bigger size- they grow so fast and so you can use footless suit a bit longer iyswim.

I also have to admit buying some two-piece oufits ie cotton or cashmere tops and pants as the buttons on sleepsuits drove me nuts.

Just vests and babygros (sleepsuits). Mine were never out of them for the first 3 months, so much easier than fiddling about with clothes.
Never bought socks or cardigans, no need as sleepsuits have feet and baby always went in a snowsuit when out, or covered with a blanket if too warm for snowsuit.

never got muslins, bought loads and they all went out in the charity bag, but I know some people swear by them

Oh, yes, and cardigans or a light jacket for when it's not cold enough for a snowsuit.

Lots of sleepsuits and vests. The rule of thumb is that the baby should wear one more layer than you. For me, this was usually the vest.

You'll probably need a few newborn sized and a few 0-3month sized. Some babies go straight into 0-3 months but DS was in the newborn stuff for a surprisingly long time for a big baby.

But you will get given lots and if you don't have enough of anything, you can pick up basics in the supermarket so don't worry too much.

Oh, and try to get sleepsuits with the foldover cuffs (to act as scratch mitts). When I had DS, only Next seemed to do them but I've seen them in Mothercare and other places now. They are great as babies always lose their scratch mitts.

I think to start with we had vests x 7, sleep suits x 7 (you might want a few more if you don't want the washing machine on all the time), hat x 2, socks x 5 (though most sleep suits have feet in them so you might not need socks), gro bag x 2 (in case of night time accidents).
