Just found best ever lipstick - but there's a catch

For many years it was Mac's Twig that did it for me. Then Rimmel's Rose Passion. Then - nada, nothing. I was in lipstick limbo. Everything looked wrong, wrong, wrong - the reds were too harsh/pinks made my teeth look yellow/earthy tones made me look like a not terribly fresh corpse.

I struggled on with an old Lancome lipgloss in a tube (2 years old and the end chopped off to eke out those last drops). Times were tough .

But I knew, It was out there. Somewhere.

Except, flippin' 'eck, I did not expect the Lipstick Goddess to tap me on the shoulder in Space NK to show me lipstick nirvana. I'd only gone in to squirt on perfume. But,fate had other plans. I spotted it, gleaming amongst the testers. The One. An Oh So Perfect shade of red without a hint of blue; luscious, moisturising, fathomless depth of colour but light as a fairy's tootsies on the lips.

I tried it. And...Yeeees, yeeees, yeeees . It made my teeth look whiter, lips fuller; hell, I think I dropped a dress size too.
But, but, but - why does the lipstick of my dreams have to cost £26?

Of course I bought it. I need that lipstick dammit. I'm just dreading when it runs out and they say it is discontinued and I will be back in lipstick limbo. Or should I buy two?

Tell me your best ever lipstick buy. Can anyone beat £26?

Superdrug's own brand Mua for £1.

I may have the face and body of Ena Sharples but by god I have the lips of Courtney Love.

traceybath · 09/08/2010 20:16

What make and colour was it please?

olderandwider · 09/08/2010 20:42

Chantecaile amaryllis

The make is Mua (their own label) and it is on an introductory offer this week for £1. There are lots of them to choose from but mine is a deep plum and is lovely. It stays on well, does not have sparkly bits in it nor a perfumey taste.

There are nail varnishes etc all for £1 but the plum lipstick sang to me - the very colour I've been looking for.

I cannot find a link.

I will be v.cross if Superdrug have anything like as nice as my £26 lippie. On the other hand, if it does, I can stock up!

I wouldn't spend £26 on a lipstick.

But I do spend £90 on foundation (also Space NK). And I find that although I have tried and liked other foundations none of them are as good as the £90 one that one.

olderandwider · 09/08/2010 20:53

Queueposition3 - link not working. It is a clear bright red, very clean and clear with no hints of orange or blue. Also, although it looks like it will go on as a solid colour it's more like an intense gloss - depth of colour but no coverage iyswim.

I am brunette, pale skin, blue eyes, and it works a treat for me.

GetOrf - I never thought I would spend £26 either! What foundation is that then? I have spent £50 plus on Terry but not totally sold on it any more. May be willing to change if I can hock the children or sell a kidney.

It's Eclat Opulent by By Terry. It's brilliant, makes my skin look flawless. Brilliant texture. I am very pale albeit pinky skin, have tried a myriad of other foundations (chantecaiile, chanel, Dior, Estee lauder, Lancome) but the colour is usually too yellow.

I have used this one for about a year now. Thankfully a pot of it lasts about 4-5 months.

MarineIguana · 09/08/2010 20:59

Some people have loads of lippies that probably cost £5-10 each (I have 3 or 4 and I'm not even a big make-up wearer)

If you only like one in the world and it's perfect and really lovely to use then I think it's worth it. Think what people spend on one night out, on drinks, taxis, fags etc. or on an item of clothing and then hardly wear it.

It may be a lot for a lipstick but in terms of joy per £ probably pretty good value.

my favourite currently is
Revlon's nude attitude matt lipstick

also v v v keen on Mac's blankety

and the best lipglosses i have tried are

Aldi's Lacura brand gloss in crystal and Barry M number 4 lip gloss

hellymelly · 09/08/2010 21:05

Oh getorf is right, byterry stuff is fabulous.I don't have the foundation as I can't quite ...yet...bring myself to shell out that much, but I have a few other products and they are all great, but overscented, that's the only dud note in the range.

olderandwider · 09/08/2010 21:06

MarineIguana - how well you put it Grin

GetOrf - I love the texture of Terry too, but not convinced the colour is right for me. I think I am turning yellow and my foundations is too pink.

My favourite is Chanel's Rouge Coco in Rouge Orage. Lovely shade of red. V wearable and lasts for ages.
