Grey hair - advice for my 56 yr old mum:-)

Hi - I know there have been a few grey hair threads on here but I am looking for some advice for my mum please Smile

She is 56 and is prob about 50% grey, however she dyes it, highlights, a blond/brown/caramel sort of colour.

Thing is the regrowth is v obvious even as little as a week after she gets it done and she is always getting down in the dumps about it Sad Mum is v young and trendy at heart, and I know she doesn't want to have a streaky head of hair - it is shoulder length so if she just left it, it would look terrible IYKWIM?

My question is can you have grey highlights put in your hair? Has anyone done this? What did it look like? Where you pleased with the result?

It is not an option to put an all over colour in my mum's hair as it would look too fake; her hairdresser refuses to really do anything with the grey streaks as she says my mum is too young to go grey and it wouldn't suit her etc. She lives in a v small village and there is only one hairdresser!!

My mum is always asking me what to do, but I don't know what to tell her!!! I've looked on google, but there's not really much help there Sad

Sorry a rambling message - basically what I want to know is how can a lady with blondie/brown hair that is more than 50% grey do with her shoulder length hair if the regrowth is too high maintenance?

I would really value any advice here!!

My Aunties both originally had dark hair, but now dye their hair blonde.

There will always be re-growth if she dyes it, but if she can get a colour closer to what it naturally is now then it should be less obvious.

Tousled/curly styles hide the roots better too.

Does she go to the hairdreseers or do it her self?
If she does it herself she would be better getting it done professionally.

Regrowth can be a problem but only after say 4 weeks.

I have highlights etc and the regrowth is not seen as the colours I have put in are almost the same as my own colour- dark blonde.

If your mum's biggest problem is grey then she needs ash tones putting in. If the main problem is her hair colour is darka dn is showing through then she needs dakrer low lights.

I find Clairol Root Touch-Ups very good - I have to have colour done professionally much less frequently now as I just whizz over the roots with this stuff in-between appointments, and I am very fussy about my hair and always swore I would never go down the home colour route!
I am amazed that regrowth is showing through after a week tho'......Confused

My mum dyed her hair for years, and talked about 'going grey' for years, and then got painful lumps on her scalp and decided to cut out the chemicals and did go grey. She immediately looked much younger. The fake colour looked natural, but showed up her 50+ yo face even more! The grey matched her face and she looked much better. She's 55 btw, and went grey about 4 or 5 years ago.

I think you have to have very good bone structure and great hair, plus great cut, to look good grey.

For almost 99% of people ( excluding Mrs W) it is ageing. (I am same age as your mum Mrs W).

I know quite a few other mums my age who have gone grey totally, and they do look much older>.It is instantly ageing unless you are young- if that makes sense! I knew a 38 yr old with grey ahir cut very short, and she looke d fab, but on older people it just looks old!

Tell your mum that she is bang on trend, see?
