What do your childrens' teachers wear?

Hi

I work in a primary school and need some new clothes for September.

Was wondering what the teachers in your child's school wear? What do you think is appropriate?

I like to wear things that are comfortable but look smart. For art day clothes that it is ok if paint may get on them!

I usually wear trousers, sometimes skirts, good jeans, fairly simple tops.

Other teachers in school wear a mix, some are very fashionable.

Any ideas of clothes? I don't like fussy tops as am slim and quite small on top so like things fitted.

Need warm clothes for later in Autumn and Winter as am outside 3 times a day on childrens' breaks.

Thanks

Hoping someone replies as I'm starting a primary PGCE in September and need some suitable clothes for when I'm in school (currently in jeans and t-shirts mainly).

In my daughters school the young early 20s wear leggings and nice tops or nice dresses. The dress code seems more relaxed here though.

I've been in a schOol with absolutely no dress code and some of the staff look so unproffesional in scruffy vests and bottoms (not on PE day) and I don't like it with the "nice" casual stuff either like bootcut jeans with nice cotton top and long cardigan- I find it too casual.

I think nice dresses are the way to go with nice shoes or boots.

Here male teachers must wear shirt, tie and jacket. Female teachers wear dresses and leggings/tights, suit trousers and jumpers/jackets, main thing I think is a good coat as inside school buildings can be quite warm.

I am a parent and i think that it is important that a primary school teacher looks
professional but comfortable.
My dd's teacher is a lovely young women, however her taste in clothes are questionable. She tends to wear micro mini skirts which would be more suitable for a nightclub.
I would suggest that you keep it simple, nice trousers, simple blouses and tops. You will be working in a primary school so i wouldn't dress up too much , but i would steer clear of the jeans.

equinox · 07/08/2010 13:23

I recall a primary teacher I had who wore tiny mini skirts - so unsuitable!!

There is a teacher at my son's primary who wears jeans it makes her look like she doesn't give a hoot about the job if you ask me.

I think smart casual is best but that is just my view. If they wear really smart clothes to me it doesn't make them look down to earth which is the feeling I would like to get from liaising with teachers.

Avid anything with winnie the pooh, etc characters on. The kids my like it, but parents will find it difficult to have any respect for you.

I would avoid jeans.

Maybe tunics with leggings and a chunky necklace and ballet flats?

Most of the women seem to wear trousers of some sort. Often with tunics. Not often jeans.

DH is a teacher and wears smart casual trousers (never jeasns) and buttoned shirts.

LynetteScavo · 07/08/2010 13:40

or a dress like this?

purplepeony · 07/08/2010 13:52

My kids are much older and not at school but from a parent's view ( and I was a teacher too) I think it's important to look smart.

I think it's ironic that teachers stress they want to be recognised as professionals yet some turn up for work looking as if they are gardening.

IME primary school teachers are the worst- wearing very casual trousers and almost jeans.

I know it can be a messy job, but smart trousers or a dress/skirt seem the bare minimum in my mind.

lucertola28 · 08/08/2010 00:47

That is a lovely dress LynetteScavo really like it.

I got these trousers

What kind of coats/jackets are stylish and warm?

Im an infant school teacher, I wear smart trousers with fairly smart tops ( no cleavage!) or leggings with a tunic or dress. One of our teachers i comes in wearing jeans and trainers and just looks like one of the parents. I think its important to look smart and no micro minis!!

Feenie · 08/08/2010 17:18

I've never known a school let you wear jeans - guess what everyone wears on training days!

Would recommend leggings, tunics, jumper dresses, boots, etc.

nancydrewrocked · 08/08/2010 17:21

Personally I think jeans are a no no and I am not really keen on leggings and tunics as work wear.

DC's teachers wear smart skirts/tousers and fitted tops with ballet flats.

ninah · 08/08/2010 17:24

jeans are verboten for us
I don't see a problem with them but I am with the preschoolers, and get literally covered in paint glitter and pva on a daily basis
the word 'nice' crops up a lot on this thread!

ninah · 08/08/2010 17:26

I do like the banana republic dress though!

Wilts · 08/08/2010 17:28

Lots of leggings and long tops/dresses at Ds's primary school.

Never jeans though.

I am not particularly bothered what they wear really.

MmeRedWhiteandBlueberry · 08/08/2010 17:28

I am a teacher and I usually wear inexpensive trouser suits. I wear a labcoat if I am likely to get messy.

My colleagues are all smartly dressed in either suits, dresses or skirts/smart top. The only casually dressed teachers are the PE teachers.

We would never be allowed to wear jeans at school, except on Mufti or Jeans for Genes days.

I have a three in one ski jacket for outdoor duties, and a school sweatshirt for outdoor activities.

horridhobo · 08/08/2010 20:23

Be very careful with low cut tops - bending over a lot is an occupational hazard.

lucertola28 · 08/08/2010 20:42

I don't really wear leggings, prefer tights with a dress/skirt.

Probably because leggings were popular when I was about 8-11

Also it is non uniform school and a lot of the girls (especially in 5th and 6th class) wear leggings and long tops. So don't want to be dressed in similar fashion.

Thanks for all the advice, I look forward to some nice shopping tomorrow.

OK, I'm secondary so maybe we're more formal but there is no way any of the teachers at my school would wear jeans or leggings - would feel very unprofessional. It's trousers or smart skirts with tights, low heels or ballet flats and shirts, jumpers and jackets here.

BelligerentGhoul · 09/08/2010 13:33

I am secondary. I tend to wear pencil skirts, a dress with short sleeves or wide legged trousers with a top. I always have at least the top half of my arms covered. Absolutely no jeans or leggings and I tend to wear stockings in the summer, as I think bare legs can look a bit unprofessional (besides bare legs with pencil skirts look v bad and a bit 'cheap', imho).

For primary, I'd say that wide legged trousers and a cami with a cardigan would be smart but comfortable - or a skirt or dress with flat shoes/boots for A/W.

CupcakesHay · 10/08/2010 20:05

I do the "boob" test by bending in front of mirror to see if my top is suitable for teaching. I'm doing PGCE too.

I wear a lot of mockshirts, def need a cardy for cold classrooms - and layers - lots of layers for the whole - hot/cold classroom thing.

I wear commfy smart shoes, and comfy smart trousers - and remember coat for Playground duty...
