eek I have a moustache that I didn't know about - what do I do?

A couple of days ago I bought a magnifying mirror and have found to my horror that I have some dark hairs growing above my lip. I am fair skinned, auburn hair so have never had to deal with dark hairs, in fact my eyebrows are almost non existent without make up. What do I do with these hairs? Pluck - or will that make them grow back worse? Bleach - or does that highlight it? I knew I had pores the size of craters, but a moustache has come as a bit of a shock.

If you've got fair skin, and the hairs are fine-ish, then Jolen bleach is good. If you've darker skin it might look like a milk moustache though.

I bleach the ole' tache, but the thicker/darker hairs on my chin need plucking. Tweezerman tweezers are the best.

dexter73 · 06/08/2010 10:24

I get my lip waxed once a month. I find that bleach works for lightening the hair but in the sun you can still see the full tache.

piratecat · 06/08/2010 10:27

i have visions of when oyu have your tash waxed, you end up with a red rash and crater like holes.

i have loive skin and dark tash, and those magnifying mirrors are scary. i try to ignore my tash but i do wonder wether i have just got used to it, but that others think omg!!

SweetnessAndShite · 06/08/2010 10:35

DH has a magnifying shaving mirror and I have discovered I am growing a beard Shock Just a few dark coarse hairs but it's the beginnings. Why did no one mention this to me?!! The more I pluck the worse it seems to get. Sorry to hijack but really interested in your replies.

cece · 06/08/2010 10:40

wax it, tis the only way.

piratecat · 06/08/2010 10:56

yes i have found a few stray beardy type hairs recently!

thegrowler · 06/08/2010 10:59

I tried threading my tache for the first time last week. It hurt like hell -so much that I was crying like a baby Blush.

dexter73 · 06/08/2010 11:26

I don't get a rash after waxing. You can't see I have had it done even straight after. I think after having it done for so long the hairs come out easier.

UML · 06/08/2010 13:00

Threading is really really good - it make take a while to get used to, but I have been doing it for ages now, and hair growth is thinner, and finer. And it takes literally a couple of minutes!

I find it works on even small hairs.

In the beginning it was extremely painful and used to get lots of spots - but after years of doing it, it is problem free. But you have to keep at it Smile

SweetnessAndShite · 06/08/2010 14:17

What's threading? I've never heard of it...

snook1 · 06/08/2010 14:56

I've also had my top lip threaded and was really pleased with the results. I was shaving (horror!) cos I was too embarrassed to have it done at a salon. But when the therapist suggested it while I was having my eyebrows threaded I bit the bullet and was really pleased that I did.
It came up a bit red, but I just went over to a make-up counter (I was in Debenams) and put on some tester foundation to cover it up.

The threading lasted for ages and got ALL of the hairs. It did hurt alot but was quite quick - only a few minutes.

Threading is where they use two bits of string and run it along your skin and the hair comes out between the twisting strings.

1234ThumbWar · 06/08/2010 18:43

ooh threading a good idea, I'm having a spray tan tomorrow and again on Tues (going on holiday, not a WAG) and they do threading. I'll ask them tomorrow if they think it needs doing.

Agree about the rash and craters - hmm what a babe Hmm.

I can't face having mine threaded... I get my eyebrows done and that's painful enough! I wax my moustache at home or get it done at beauticians when I think of it. I have very fair skin and used to have auburn-y hair too (now it's grey under the colour) and the moustache and beard were a bit of a shock for me too Grin

ArseHolio · 06/08/2010 18:59

You cAn buy little pots of facial hair wax from body care for a couple of quid. I heat it up on the hob and do it about once every 3 weeks.

Rip it out by the roots it is the only way.

Monkeytoo · 07/08/2010 04:14

I've been having mine removed with laser treatments. It hurts a bit but should be pretty much permanent with occasional maintenance treatments (I hope). I'm in the US but it's costing me about #100 a session and apparently will take 5/6 sessions. I'm on session 4 and it's mostly gone now.

My skin was too irritated by waxing and nair / bleaching wasn't completely doing the job. I'd have it done on my bikini line too but that's double the price...

darksideofthemooncup · 07/08/2010 04:20

Threading works brilliantly but fecking hurts. I have invested in an epilator which isn't quite as good but does the job, its bloody hard to do your upper lip though (ouchouchouch)Grin

1234ThumbWar · 07/08/2010 15:09

Epilating!! no way, have recently had a go at epilating my bikini line and that was very painful.

Another vote for threading here. Like other posters said, it does sting but you do become acustomed to it.

I've been having mine done for a couple of years but I do look as if I've been in a flash fire for about 15 minutes afterwards.

bumpypaws · 07/08/2010 15:29

I used an epilator for a couple of years on my legs, and ended up with the most horrendous ingrowing hairs, which I still have, even after going back to shaving. A beautician told me it was because an epilator pulls hairs out at different angles and warps the follicles, so the hairs grow back at different angles. I don't know how true this is, but the epilator has left me with horrible scarred legs Sad. I wouldn't want his on my face!

Scuttlebutter · 08/08/2010 00:00

Have it waxed professionally. A good salon will do it well, and ensure you don't have a rash the next day. They can also keep an eye on chin, jowls and neck - all also danger areas for sproutiness. Sad

runoutofnameideas · 08/08/2010 23:18

If you have it waxed does it grow back kind of stubbly if it's dark hair?

choclab · 19/09/2010 09:35

i had my upper lip waxed , first time , ouch ...now 2 days on got rash white type spots ...so now i look a right state ...wont do that again ...

is that normal ? i do get them on my middle eye brows , hope goes down soon ...

Bechka · 19/09/2010 21:42

Threading, always. I have eyebrows and upper lip done, and am always pleased with results, although it takes about an hour for the skin to calm down!
