Is there such a thing out there as a powerful but inexpensive hairdryer for uber thick hair that holds water like a sponge?

My hairdryer has slowly lost power recently and I think is soon going off to the salon in the sky, mind you it is about 8 years old!

I have very long very thick hair that holds water ridiculously well (it takes about 30 mins to blow dry with my current hairdryer and if I tie it up or plait it wet on a morning it is still sopping when I take it down in the evening) so I need something that's powerful but (hopefully) doesn't knacker my hair with the heat

My friend was wittering about ionising hairdryers (or maybe she said deionising?) that apparently don't ruin your hair so much - are they for real or a load of codswallop?

I wouldn't mind paying a little more for a really good hairdryer but I've been trawling through hundreds online and I have no idea if any are worth the extra money or if I'd just be paying for the brand, eg toni & guy

Any make or model recommendations would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Yes yes! I have a Nicki Clarke one, hang on and I will find it on Amazon.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/08/2010 16:03

here

It is fantastic, honestly. It used to take me forever to dry my hair, and mine is only shoulder length although extremely thick. With this it takes less than 5 minutes, and that is with styling it as well.

oooh thanks Alibaba!

I was thinking of asking for a Parlux for Xmas. It's used in loads of salons for speedy drying.

chocolatefroggie · 05/08/2010 16:08

I also have thick hair and its curly frizzy and i have just bought this it's brilliant used to take me 45mins to do my hair now it takes 10!

HinnyPet · 05/08/2010 16:08

Madre have you tried washing your hair in the evening and then tying it back? The next morning it takes hardly any time to put up or dry.
My hair is just the same, takes 45 mins to dry from wet and then it's still holding water.

MadreInglese · 05/08/2010 16:26

thanks for all those suggestions

the parlux one might be a leeetle too pricey tbh

chocolate froggie what on earth is on the end of that one? It looks like some kind of mutant epilator, I'd be a bit scared to put that near my head, lol

yes tried that hinnypet and it's still wet in the morning!

even when I leave it to dry on a weekend it takes a good 2-3 hours and is still a bit damp

a decent hairdryer would save me sooo much time and with mine about to conk it's the perfect excuse reason to get a new one

just got a remington from argos - less than £30, fab. Lightweight but powerful. It's the one that has a lot of good reviews on the argos website.

Granard · 05/08/2010 16:56

Hi, another vote for Parlux. It's an investment. My hairdresser reckons I'll be passing it on to my daughter 'cos they last forever and it gives a great blowdry. So worth the extra money.

MadreInglese · 05/08/2010 17:06

hmmmmmm

they are twice the price of t'others though

I usually go for a 2000W one with super long cord - I had a remington but now I'm on a revlon

greenlotus · 05/08/2010 22:45

I got myself a salon dryer from ebay (ETI), it's well powerful, definitely a cut above my previous one and about £25 that's all.

chocolatefroggie · 05/08/2010 23:00

Madre Inglese they are ceramic combs which smooth and straighten the hair but also mean that it drys much more quickly - so no epilation promise!

springer4 · 06/08/2010 09:50

I'm a hairdresser in the west end and although the parlux dryers are pricy they really are your best option as you'll probably never need buy another for 20 yrs. Also look at having a brazillian blowdry ,brilliant for taming difficult hair for months ,reducing drying time sometimes by half.

Granard · 06/08/2010 15:31

Springer4, what kind of blowdry is that? Is it the same as the 12 week blowdry?
