or even mums of older children.

i've been starting to get a few things sorted for my dd, ordering name tags, sorting her wardrobe trying to make sure she has everything she need for september.

but i've also found myself thinking, what should i get for myself!

just thinking of things like new dresses, tops, coats, kaybe some new boots.

i haven;'t worn a watch for 3 years since i had dd, but i need to get a batterie in my old watch, so i've dug out a rather expensive one from day of yore.

they are sort of things i'd like, almost need but not quite need iyswim!

but to be honest, i think i want people to think myelf and dd look nice.

we are lucky that we have alot of family around and quite alot of friends, but i realise i'm about to enter this whole new world, where i'm going to mix with the parents i will probably see regularly/everyday for the rest of dd's schooling and i suppose i want to seem nice, friendly and look nice

I have to say, didn't really give it much thought - always wear make up (or just fake tan in summer), like I would anyway, and wear work clothes on days I work. On days i don't, jeans, boots/flip flops and nice tops. Not worth stressing about - be yourself!

Ill be lucky to wear matching shoes....first day of college when dd starts nursery

Your child starting school is the beginning of a new phase in your life, and probably the start of a new routine for you as a family.

When I started at university I treated myself to some new clothes... because I like clothes and it seemed an appropriate time to buy some. When ever I have started a new job I have done likewise. When I stopped working to be a SAHM, I bought some new things then. What's wrong with the OP wanting some nice new things as she gets into a new routine in her life?

My only tip, is not to raise the bar too high from day 1. When my DD started school 3 years ago I decided to make an effort to be groomed at the school gate and never appeared without proper makeup, accessories, hair done etc. The problem is that now, if I show up without my lipstick on, people do a concerned face and ask if I'm OK, am I very tired, is everything alright?

Some interesting replies here. I see from some of them that you might think I am a bit of a slob. I like to look presentable, so if I have been gardening for example I would change out of my scruffies into clean jeans to collect DD from school. I don't wear make up on non work days as I am fortunate enough not to need it.

My mum friends can tell when I am on my way to work as I do dress up for work, wear heels and make up. I usually get complimented when I have made the effort. I bought a great leather jacket from TK Max last autumn and was very flattered when one of my friends bought a similar one as she liked it so much. I am not exactly a fashion icon and try to wear what suits me rather than what is in fashion. I can't say that I have ever seen anyone at school wear anything from Boden. Round here it is Primark, TK Max, H & M, M & S, Next, Asda etc.

Luckily, the mums I know are not in the least judgemental about what everyone looks like and this is perhaps why I was a little surprised at the OP's original question.

I do finding dressing specifically for the school run a little odd (but mine only do nursery so maybe once I'm doing a school run I will see what you are all on about!)

For nursery drop-off/pick up I just wear whatever is appropriate for my day (not the half hour I'll spend at nursery), so I'm going to be working outside I'll wear jeans and hiking boots, if its a work meeting or a day in the office I'll wear something smart and (I like to think) stylish, if I'm doing home stuff, seeing friends, running errands I'll wear whatever I feel like.

Generally I like to look nice and well groomed (and I love to give and receive compliments!) but really it's for me, not what other parents will think. It had never occurred to me that people dressed for the school run until I came on Mumsnet!
