What would your 'child's(toddler) capsule wardrobe' be for autumn/winter?

I just googled 'child's capsule wardrobe' and found nothing. Surely this cannot be right...

I am aspiring to be more organised than I have been now that I have 3 pre school children to clothe. My boy has been wearing girl's clothes with no pink in (hand me downs from sister) so far and as he nearly one I think he deserves better!

I need a list to sort him out for a busy winter of outdoor romping and a not very warm house.

Suggestions please!

Glad I found this thread- so helpful!

Does anyone know where I can get warm all in one sleepsuits in age 2-3? Online preferably? Next does them but you have to open a credit account to shop online which I'm loathe to do....

Those of you with girls, TK Maxx has got some lovely colourful long sleeved cord and knit dresses in at the moment.

nicolamumof3 · 11/08/2010 18:14

monkey you can order them instore at next for delivery at home for £2 or into store for free without having to open an account Smile they are great sleepsuits had some until my ds3 started potty training the 2-3 is v.generous.

isitme..under the suit they will just need normal clothes on, im a great fan of dungarees for winter as no draughts!

I have been giving this a lot of thought over the past few weeks and have now compiled a masterlist for economy/practicality/style and handdownability! So here goes...

I have girls and a boy, so my number one rule is:

  1. Pick unisex basics wherever possible in neutral colours and minimal patterns that don't clash with each other.

And following on from that....

  1. Aim to have everything matching everything else ( except for tights and t-shirts) so that they can choose their own clothes without the effect being too disastrous.

Plus finally...

  1. Layer for warmth rather than chunking up as it is more practical and also more comfortable.

So this is my capsule A/W toddler wardrobe for either sex:

14 pairs of pants (m and s)
7 pairs of socks (m and s)
7 pairs of tights (fun colours such as from Next) (girls)
4 pairs of blue or grey tights (for very cold days) (boys)
4 sleeveless thermal vests (m and s)
2 pairs thermal longjohns (m and s)
A good selection of long and short sleeved t-shirts in blues, whites, reds, purples, browns and greens (the colours I like and suit my children, also not gendered).
As many dungarees and pinafore dresses as you can find in the right size on ebay in cream, denim and navy blue (Oshkosh definitely the best, and often only a few pounds but worth spending more on as they can be worn all year and last for lots of growth).
2 lovely warm wool cardigans or jumpers (slimline not chunky so good for layering) maybe one light one dark (and always take them off for meals so they don't need washing too often)
2 padded gilets (I've got a great faux-fur lined one from tesco
1 fleece lined raincoat (jjmmbebe ones are amazing though I am afraid I get twins discount which makes them about a fiver cheaper)
1 pair of waterproof dungarees (loads of options but I have gone for jjmmbebe again)
1 hat with earflaps, one scarf or snood if you are worried about neck constriction and one pair of stretchy 'magic' gloves.
1 sturdy pair of waterproof ankle boots (often fine in lieu of wellies on dank days and look good with trousers or skirts) (Clarks leather ones can be waterproofed with a spray).
1 pair of wellies.

I am trying this anyway. I reckon my children will look gorgeous and be warm all winter, and hopefully will be able to wear most of the clothes into the summer too.

So thanks for all the tips and I hope this is useful too...

I just got one for my 2 year old DD from a retail outlet GAP who had 40% off. It all came to £100:

  • One pair of cords
  • One pair of skinny jeans
  • One pair of bootcut jeans
  • One denim skirt
  • 2 Pairs of jogging bottoms
  • 3 Pairs of leggings
  • 4 long sleeved tops
  • 3 hooded tops

H&M are really good for coats on a budget, at least they were last year.

On the subject of tights for boys BTW - H&M have a blue pair with cars on this year. Boots have got a lovely set in their girls' section which is a 3-pack of bright stripes and contains no pink!
