Wasn't sure where to put this, but I'm sure some of you super stylish laydees have tried them...

Have a new outfit just opened nearby offering a free trial so was gonna give it a bash... But wondered if they really work? Any success stories out there...? They seem too good to be true...!

Erm do you mean power plate?

bodeniiiiites · 31/07/2010 18:50

my dh swears by them them at the gym. I think they are instruments of torture.Gym instructors all like them too

If you're expecting magical results with little effort, afraid they're too good to be true! I'm a personal trainer and have seen all sorts of exercise fads come and go. The powerplate/vibrogym machines are on their second wave - they first appeared about 10 years ago then gradually went away again.

That said, if you have a good instructor and you're doing proper, functional exercises using the machines then you will see some benefits (mainly from the exercises themselves, not necessarily the machines!). Steer clear of the beauty salon style places that have sprung up which offer power plate/toning machines. Oh if only it was that easy I'd stop working and sit on the sofa eating BIG pies.

LL - Yes, see I know nuffin!

B - That's what I think!

HC - Humph! That's also what I thought... Back to the exercise and dieting, bluddy hard work that malarky...

We've got powerplates at our gym. It's not a case of just standing on them, you need to do exercises on them.

I've been going to the gym regularly, so my muscles are quite toned. I had a session on the powerplate - all over exercises, but particularly some squats and lunges. I did one minute sets of each and boy could I feel my muscles the next day! The machines are making your muscles contract at a fast rate while you do the exercises so they make the exercise more intense. I definitely wouldn't have ached the next day after a couple of minutes of squats and lunges done without the powerplate.

I thought you were on the wrong talk board iyswim

bodeniiiiites · 01/08/2010 18:16

you have to have an induction for them so you know what you are doing . Youre not supposed to just jump on them and go

oliviafrombolivia · 01/08/2010 20:54

I once used one of these on the wrong setting, (high meant for legs) on the upper body exercises, I am surprised I had any fillings left when I finished.

ladylush · 01/08/2010 21:09

Ha ha - don't sit on one then. I was trying to do an exercise which involves sitting on the power plate. I had to get up immediately. Sit on one and you'll see what I mean.
