Has anyone used henna from lush??

If so please tell me about it! I want to cut out all harsh chemicals from my hair routine, including permanent hair dyes, but I'm a bit scared of henna!

My hair is extremely dark brown, almost black naturally, but I've been dying it chestnut for about 10 years. Have been going grey since I was 14, will lush henna cover greys? I want to use caca brun (the brown one), would this make my hair brown?

I've used their henna in the past, although not the brown one. It won't make your hair a different colour as such, just amplify and deepen its natural colour. Grey hairs apparently absorb the colour more intensely - your greys will presumably show up as lighter/brighter strands of brown. They do advise doing a strand test first so I'd include a few greys to see how they turn out.

Henna is a nice dye option, makes your hair lovely and soft and shiny. It looks and smells like crap while you're using it though, so be prepared

Yes, and it has great results, but dear god the mess! (and the smell) Just so much hassle.

I can't speak about covering grey though.

JollyBear · 28/07/2010 12:16

I used it years ago and really loved the colour. It is very smelly and messy to apply but I found that all part of the fun. However, you cannot dye over it when you get fed up, you have to grow it out. On my graduation photos I have mousey brown hair to my ears and then rather redish glossy hair to my chin. Not a good look.

What about a vegetable colour instead?

HonestyBox · 28/07/2010 15:24

Daniel field vegetable colours are supposed to be good, I used one years ago and it was great.

My sister used it a few years ago to cover grey and her hair had a bit of greenish tinge afterwards - so definitely strand test. It is messy and faffy, - best if you can get a friend to help IME.

OctaviaH · 28/07/2010 18:51

Just got back with my block of caca brun! Excited to try it, the grey is definitely making an appearance again!

kurrikurri apparently henna makes your hair go green if it has contact with metal, did your sister use a metal bowl/spoon to mix it up?

jollybear do you mean normal dye wont take once it's been hennaed? If so that doesn't bother me too much, but you cam touch the roots up with more henna surely?

I found them quite disappointing in retrospect. messy and faffy to use

i used the brown and red.

both made hair nice and shiny. but didn't really alter the colour at all

octavia You shouldn't attempt to put a chemical colour over henna-d hair as the chemical opens up the hair shaft and pushes the henna further in. So it does technically 'take' but it could do strange things to the colour / condition.

Some hairdressers will colour over henna but you need to find one who knows what they are doing.

KurriKurri · 28/07/2010 19:44

Thanks Octavia - IIRC she mixed it in a saucepan! that's a mystery cleared up.
Hope you have success with yours.

JollyBear · 28/07/2010 20:36

octavia Oh yes you can touch up the roots but when you've had enough of henna it is a bugger to get rid of! I would second getting a friend to help, oh and lots of vasaline on your hairline/ears - it is like throwing cow poo on your scalp!

Have fun!
